Geocaching (Evansville, Birdseye: house, living, vacations)

I was wondering who, if anyone, participates in geocaching in Indiana? I tried it tonight with my son and daughter, but didn't find the cache we were looking for. We're going out tomorrow (I'm still in Texas as we haven't sold our house yet ) to another location in the small town we live in, then a couple others in a bigger town about an hour away.

In case you don't know, geocaching is treasure-hunting with a GPS. There's a website geocaching.com were can get coordinates to find hidden treasure (usualy something very small in a plastic container, along with a log for you to sign, but I think the more advanced searches get more elaborate). I read about it in Midwestern Living, then found the website. Supposedly there are 5,000 caches in a 25 mile radius of Indy. I would love to hear stories of finding any, if anyone has.

I don't geocache, but some of my buddies in Evansville geocache all the time. They have found caches in I think 30 states. They have told me more stories than I care to ever remember. They plan their vacations together and spend the whole week traveling and geocahing.

Well, we went out today to two sites, and we found both caches. It was fun, but I suspect it'll be more fun in Indiana, simply because the woods there are not near as dense with thicket and black widows I'll never get used to finding those critters. Also, we're FAR from suberbia, so there aren't really any cool city finds, unless we drive an hour or so.

DC38, I looked up several hunts in Evansville, as that will be where I start my hunts in Indiana. I bet I could name a few of your buddies' handles. There were a few logins that were all over the listings.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun, and gave us something not completely exhausting to do outdoors in 100 degree heat. The kids got excited at finding the caches, more so than I thought they would. It's definately worth a try, especially if you have kids.

Geocaching is a lot of fun. Me and 2 friends went late last year and part of this spring. I'd love to find someone around that likes to go! My 2 friends got lazy and won't go anymore.

Anyone who hasn't heard of it, or hasn't yet tried it, Really should go out! You don't HAVE to use a GPS unit. We didn't. Just looked up the coords on Google Maps. To get a good idea of what the area looked like, looked it up on maps.live.com "Birdseye" view. Then, headed out. Always found what we were after.

I wish I remembered their website. They have tons of pictures from the geocaching trips. Did you happen to see a SolarWib? That is the only handle I remember; I think that is his handle. He has gone cross country to find caches.

You might find the IndianaMap of interest. It's a little different than Google Maps and like sites. Explore the folders on the right site of the map, there are more than 200 layers. Perhaps while you are looking for a geocache you would also like to know if there are any historical canals, or big trees in the area. Maybe take a look at the USGS quad map for the area or an aerial photo.

My hubby and I went geocaching this evening for the first time and we found 3. It was pretty neat. We live in the country, and there are quite a few nearby. I enjoyed it!

We go geocaching occasionally. There are a few on the campus of Notre Dame, some in Potato Creek State Park... including one we've never managed to find, but according to the website is still there.

We haven't been caching much around where we live now, though I'm surprised how many caches are hidden in our area. I think if it weren't raining, I'd go hunting now :-)

what kind of stuff do people leave behind in these caches?
