nice area near Columbus
Hello all, i am making plans to move in the future to Columbus and was wondering if it is a nice city. If not what cities near it are good? We would want a little bit of property and rural settings, but not to far from shopping, stores, etc. Already have a job lined up and it is in Columbus. Any info would be great.

I live in Columbus ... we love it here. Made the move from Fishers, which I was skeptical about, but this has been the best move we've ever made for our family.
You can get anything from something close to downtown or something on the back 40 ... really depends on how much you want to spend.
Does that help???

Hello allisonguru,
I have lived in Columbus all my life. Columbus is a great and safe community. We have small city life and we have rural life, both are great. And if you are looking for big city life, well, it is about 45-60 minutes away depending on if you go North or South. South leads to Louisville and North leads to Indianapolis. Another great location for rural living is Brown County...not too far from Columbus about 15 to 20 minutes could be farther if you get way in the boonies.
Good Luck,

My wife and I moved here from Melbourne, Australia, in July last year. We like Columbus very much. Although the city may not have as much as we used to have in Melbourne and Bangkok (we moved from Bangkok to Melbourne then Columbus), comparing to the sizes of the 3 cities, 4.5 millions in Melbourne, 15 millions in Bangkok and 40k in Columbus, we feel Columbus offers more than what the a city of the same size could do.
However, we are not much of an outgoing people as on the weekend we spend our time doing gardening and on our house and from time to time go to we other cities such as Nashville and Bloomington.
In the nutshell, this is a very nice city and we love living here.

Look out for the areas which were flooded in June 2008!!!!!! Hard to find homes that were not affected by the flood!!! I am looking myself and there is so much mold here in the Columbus area!!!
I am about to be homeless, as the home I just moved into 12 weeks ago has been sold and I have 21 days to get out!! I have looked for just someone who is willing to share expenses and can't find that even!!!!!!!!
Good luck to you and those seeking housing in this area because I am one of them that need the luck!! My time is running out!!

If you look from google map, most areas affected by flood are close to the river. And that flood was called a 500-year flood because in the history of Columbus,as far as there was a record, it had never had such a high level of rain before.
There are areas which are not in flood area, as far as I know, Tipton Lakes, which is higher than Columbus. However the cons of Tipton Lakes would be relatively expensive; expensive community fees; a bit far from downtown and many things; high property tax; and the covenants which can some time make you feel uncomfortable. Apart from these, this area is quiet, beautiful and safe. You would see people jogging, walking, biking, and etc. all the time in spring, summer and fall. Watch out for bad home builders and realtors in Tipton Lakes though if you are interested in buying a house in this area.

We here in Park Forest didn't get flooded either. It was the people who lived on or near Haw Creek that were most devastated, although when I was riding my bike on the trail yesterday through Noblitt Park, I was amazed at how devastated the area looked.
