Well said, kanhawk!!! The OP of this opinion has no right to say whites are racist against blacks for being afraid of them. If there is racist in this equation, it is just as likely racist, white-hating blacks who commit a disproportionate number of violent crimes in greater South Bend. Not all blacks from greater South Bend, of course, but a large enough contigent of them exhibiting those behaviors to inspire a realistic fear in local white residents.

Like you pointed out, kanhawk, few towns are as racist as Gary. The last I knew, the residents of that city were shamelessly and openly bigoted against anyone who is not black. There are horror stories by the dozen about white people being harassed in Gary. In the late nineties, the big thing was that, if you were white and dared to try to eat in a McDonald's in Gary, the workers would probably spit in your food, or might refuse to serve you at all.

I don't know what world some of these liberals live in, but it certainly is not the one I was born into and have lived in for my thirtysome years on this earth. They act like whites are these horrible bigots and are always picking on the poor, innocent, peace-loving blacks. Since the seventies, few whites have been racist. We have been taught to be accepting of black people, and to treat them with human decency. Unfortunately, not all, but far too many, black people have not been taught the same in recent decades. Many blacks are highly racist against anyone who is not black. Cities like Gary and Detroit remain disgustingly bigoted against non-black people in the twenty-first century, while small town, white america has learned, by and large, to leave bigotry behind. A black person can walk down the street in Angola or LaGrange, and, if anything, white teens these days will want to talk to him or her, and think that it is really cool to meet a black person. In Gary or Detroit, however, the same is not usually the case. A white person who musters the cahonis to take a stroll in a black neighborhood will probably be harassed at the very least, and runs a good chance of being beaten or killed for no other reason than the color of their skin. Is this the America we want to become?? A place where blacks are allowed to be racist pigs, while others learn to progress beyond the stupidity of racism?? I think not. Wake up, liberals, and smell the reality. The sixties are long gone. Martin Luther King's dream has not been achieved, though, when all races of people are not taught to be accepting of all other races. As long as whites cannot take a stroll in a black neighborhood and be treated as a person instead of as "whitey" or "hey white boy", this country still has a long way to go

Wether IN is regressive or progressive...at least your moving. Try coming to Missouri and stand still But really...no matter which state you live in, some areas are more progressive than others. I live in a more rural area which is more of a "stand still" pace whereas the larger city area seem more progressive.
