after seeing Florida tornadoes lately, I would say Indiana isn't bad at all when it comes to twisters.

I haven't seen a twister in/near Fort Wayne since 02ish.
However there was one that ripped apart the ground somewhere just north of Decatur (SE of New Haven/Ft Wayne) last spring. |

Tornado's can be bad in Indiana and can occur in any season. However, the biggest threat is in the spring or early summer. Check the link above for pictures of an Indiana twister. |

thank God we don't have mass evacuations here in Indiana for tornadoes. when a tornado touches down, it comes quickly and goes away as fast as it came. one can't say the same thing about hurricanes.

In my almost ... 40 years on this earth, I've only been through 1 tornado. In the 60+ years my parents have lived in Indiana, they've only been through 1 tornado. Chances are, you'll never see one.

I'm generally not afraid of them in the Ft. Wayne vicinity... when I lived in the heart of Tornado Alley in Edmund Oklahoma it was a different story. I was young and oh my gosh I went from being a Thunderstorm enthusiast to being on extreme alert whenever I heard thunder.
When I moved my family out here we saw damage a tornado had done in Warsaw... very isolated/quick as Southside Shrek described... looked likeit touched down, wiped out the corners of a couple houses and then jumped back up into the sky. In light of all the tornados I've seen mentioned on the news over the past few years, in all parts of the country, I'd say no place is 100% tornado free. I wouldn't worry about it. |
