Weekend in Jasper
Myself and a freind will be visiting Jasper the 1st weekend of October. Staying at the Jasper Inn. Great hotel by the way. We were wondering if anyone could recommend a good place to have dinner besides the hotel. They have good food there but "been there done that." Wouldnt mind finding a place with good steaks and ice cold beer. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I grew up down that way.. some good places to eat are the Heichelbech, the Schnitzelbank (VERY good), The Great Wall (if you like Chinese food). The Gaslight in Huntingburg & the Chicken Place in Ireland (not a far drive to either)
Have fun

Sure thing Too bad you missed the Strassenfest- plenty of ice cold beer for ya. Although you might have to switch out the steak for a bratwurst

I'll second the recommendation for The Heichelbech, as I was there for dinner this past July and thought it was delicious. I had both of what you're looking for, so I can tell you for certain that they steak was very good, and the beer was not only ice cold, but just as good as the steak! Nice atmosphere within the restaurant, too. Speaking of the atmosphere, we had a cute waitress serving us there, but she had a b/f, or so she told me, but that's getting off topic a bit I guess.
Anyways, while in town, I stayed 3 nights at The Jasper Inn, too. As you may know, until recently, it was a Holiday Inn, and like you said, it's a nice place. For the past 30+ years, my family has had a family reunion there every July. We've definitely seen the place through the years... when we first started going there in the early 70's, the pool area wasn't enclosed yet, the 'annex' wasn't yet built, etc. Since Jasper Inn took over from Holiday Inn, I think the place has gotten much better, as far as accomodations, service, and furnishings in the rooms go (such as flat screen LCD TV's in the rooms, etc.).
Enjoy your trip!

LOL- I'm sure you won't be the only one Funny, I love sauerkraut (gotta be that German heritage) but when I fix it my husband & kids just gag & I have to keep it off the dinner table. Apparently it doesn't smell much better going in than coming out!
Yes, I remember going to the Jasper Inn on many occasions back when it was the Holiday Inn. Growing up, I also remember going to Holiday World when it was Santa Claus Land- my mom still calls it that But it's nice to see the small southern towns growing & changing.

I was able to get the same room at the Jasper Inn as i had last time. Only 30 staggering steps from the lounge to the room. But the room is poolside so we gotta be careful while staggering!!!!!!!! If these old bones could stand the winters better I could see myself living in southern Indiana. i think its beautiful and the people are great!!
