Relocating to Indiana
Moving from Southern California, looking at just west of Indianapolis. Considering Avon. We are wondering about the area, schools, homes, people, etc.

Avon is lovely, affordable and the schools are good. Might I also add Fishers to your list. It was recently named the 25th best place (I know coming from California, it probably doesn't mean much, but the Indiana, it does) to live in America. We've lived in Fishers for 3 years and are relocating to Columbus at th end of the year ... so if you need a house ...

Fishers
Do check it out. It's easy to get to anything from here. Not knowing your situation (kids, job, etc), I could go off on a tangent.

Will be visiting
We plan on visiting at the end of June. We are making up a list of places to check out. We had also posted a message on the Indystar website and have been receiving some interesting responses. We have an 8 year old daughter and we hear the schools are pretty good in the area's that we will be visiting. We are in the process of selling our home here in Orange County, Caif. We are both born and raised here and we are just basically tired of the rat race that Southern California has turned into. Some one emailed us a video clip of Avon, and it looks gorgeous. The homes are spaced apart really nice. Out here, the homes are about 15 to 20 feet apart. We are especially impressed with the slower pace of life out there. It seems that people are really friendly and honest and we hope that is what we experience when we visit. Any other information that you may wish to share will be appreciated. Thankyou.

Don't do it!
I moved to Evasville IN after growing up in PA and living in KC, MO for 10 yrs. I couldn't even make it 4 months. Yes, the cost of living is cheap. But they people are as backward as they come. Also, very conservative and live for church. No good stores and the people are like 20 yrs behing the times, it was like being in a time warp. Indiana is the oddest state and I visited many parts.
I think you would be in for a huge cultture shock as I was especially coming from CA

grass is greener in Greenwood
Add Greenwood to your list. Unlike the other towns mentioned, traffic is at a minimum!! Great for everyone -- great schools (Center Grove), shopping (mall and more), tax base, etc...

Evansville
Upon re-reading ... please don't let someone who had a bad experience with Evansville (located in the extreme southern portion of our state), reflect on what the rest of the state is like. Yes, Indiana isn't the most exciting place (like California ... hello! No comparison), but it's pretty typical for the midwest. Sorry you had such a bad time, but be fair.

Is there any particular reason for moving to this area, such as a job? If so, where is the job (city, not company)?
There are a lot of nice places in the area, and which is best depends on what you're looking for. Take into consideration commute time, schools, housing, neighborhoods, proximity to shopping, etc.
Let us know more about what you're looking for...
