Default Flooding in Fort Wayne

Hello All,

My family and I may be relocating to Fort Wayne and I have heard some "watch out for floods" warnings. Are there areas of Fort Wayne that are not subject to flooding? Having lived in Iowa City shortly prior to the huge flood that covered areas which were thought to be safe... I am a little nervous.

Also, I have small children. Is Fort Wayne what you would call a "child friendly" city? We are going to try to go visit to take a look for ourselves, as well, but it would be nice to have some personal opinions from people who actually live there, so we are not just hearing to spiel from those who want us to come work for them!

Thanks!

Have no fears about flooding in FTW. I lived there 5 yrs and while some areas did flood while I was there, it was only in certain areas that are close to the rivers that were affected. If you have a real estate agent working with you to find a home, you wont have any trouble w/ flooding. There are certain areas, mainly in the downtown and surrounding areas that are prone to flooding, there are 3 rivers that converge in the areal. But its not an every year type of thing and MOST of the town is high and dry.

I think FTW is a great family town. Plenty of shopping, restaurants, parks, the zoo and theatres too.
I lived in the area near Jefferson Pointe Shopping center and LOVED it.

Jodyrose was right on target concerning the flooding issues. You don't need to worry about that!

I think that Fort Wayne is very child friendly. We have some very good school systems, some wonderful neighborhoods and a surplus of very nice homes for sale.

I've lived all over the city during my lifetime and right now I am living west of the Jefferson Pointe area. There are lots of restaurants and shopping in that area, and the SWAC schools are highly regarded, as are the NWAC schools. There seems to be lots of activities for pre-schoolers in the area.

Our family moved to FW 12+ yrs. ago and is happy to concur with the other two posters. There is plenty to do - especially with children. The Allen Co. library branches have children's activities, the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is one of the top children's zoos in the country, Science Central, Fox Island nature center, many local parks, several pro-affiliated sports teams/events, festivals in all seasons, greenway and bike/walking trails, museums, a symphony, theaters, and college campuses (for addt'l sports or rec activities). FW is a big enough city with lots of amenities, yet maintains its "small town" feel. Fairly low cost of living vs other cities of similar size; can get a lot of house for the money here. Pokagon State Park is just up I-69 a bit. Plenty of area lakes/recreation in the summer (or other season, for that matter!). Major cities (i.e. Indy, Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, etc.) are within a few hours for addt'l options or a plethora of smaller communities to explore with interesting history, quaint downtowns, etc. within a stone's throw. People are friendly and the city itself has a "family oriented" feeling overall. SW & NW Allen Co. schools tend to rate the best, but there are magnet schools with some fantastic programs also.

As previously stated, flooding depends on where you are in the city, but typically contained to certain areas. Don't hesitate to contact your insurance agent re: flood plain info when looking at apts/homes before moving or signing.

You're on the right track and C-D is a FANTASTIC resource. Continue to research (search the web re: FW & area, request info, read newspapers online, etc.) and visit before making such a large decision. Best of luck in your decision!!

Thank you!!!!
It is so hard deciding where to relocate with a family. I remember when it was just me and it was no problem to try different places and then just move on. Now... moving is a tragedy with my very dramatic 7-year-old. I feel bad... but we really need to move. I know she'll get over it, but we would like to try to find a place that we can stay in for a bit and settle.

I really appreciate the input and info!

Another chime in this mix, stating also that FtW and surrounding areas are great for families, and also not to fret much about the flooding in the area. With that said, however, do be aware that there are roads that during/after heavy rains and saturated grounds that will be cut off and/or quite deep with water. But nothing at all similar to true flooding as you've and other poor souls have experienced. Good luck w/ the move and your 7 yo youngster - couple trips to the zoo and other places and should be better.

Thank you again! I am thinking that a few trips to the zoo might help. Of course, I have warned my hubby that with all the good friends she has where we are right now... he may have to buy a zebra or two to have in the house to distract her!

I am so glad to read that Fort Wayne is a nice place for families. I have been doing a lot of research... but it is always nice to hear it from people who actually live there. We can't wait to visit!
