Question Moving To Peru

We live in Sunny So-Cal and are moving to Peru next spring. My father lives their currently, though he has only lived there about a year. Can anyone give me a real feel for the area. Are people really welcoming? Has anyone from warm weather transplanted there happily? Is there things for elementry school children to do and teenagers? Civic events, places to volunteer? I just want to get a full view. I have visited but it was only for a week, we will be out there this july too! I don't mind the heat and humidity, I find it nicer then the dry heat of out here. (I know I'm weird, but I do prefer the humidity. ) How's the drive into Indy? I would really like to know all the small every day details of living in the Peru, and possibly Kokomo or Wabash area too.

I can get to my house in Fishers (north of Indianapolis) from Peru in a little over an hour. You'll probably also do things in Fort Wayne too. Peru and Wabash are about as small town Indiana as it gets, IMO. They are both river towns and have a significan rural (farming) population. I went to a small college near Wabash. It's not my cup of tea, but I know people who love living there. It's really what you make of it. Weather wise, Peru is in what I call the weird weather swath of the state (Southside Shrek could attest to this). You can get ice or snow in the winter and the summers can be hot and humid. The former Grissom AFB is close by and they have a cool air museum (lots of planes).

Good luck!

There's no way that I would move to Peru. Let's face it. Most of the real action in this State is in Indy and the greater Indy metropolitan area. when I want real action, I drive to Indy and not to Peru, Kokomo or Wabash.

Well, the drive doesn't seem bad, it takes that on a great day to get to Los Angeles from our home and were about 65 miles away, it usually take 2 to 2 1/2 hours to get there. We are looking to quiet down our life. Here it is always go go go, even when there is nothing to do. A big reason for the move is so that my kids can play outside with out having to be hyper- aware of everyone that passes by. I want them to be able to smile at people that walk by. Not be scared if someone is going to harm them on there way to school or a friends house. It really is like that in most places I have been in southern Cali. We don't need to much entertainment, just something to do some weekends. My dad is stationed at Grissom, I have already had the pleasure of seeing the base, and the runway and am looking forward to the museum this July. Is July your hottest month? Here it is August into the first half of Sept. July is mild staying 90-100.

August is about the hottest month around North Central, Indiana with temps getting up into the mid and high 90's at times.

It really depends. Expect hot humid weather in June, July or August. You can research the Peru schools at the Indiana Dept. of Education website. You'll find stuff to do on the weekends, but you may have to travel a little. Keep in mind, most folks in Indiana think it's appalling that anyone would sit in a car for an hour to go places. It's a different culture.

And hey, Peru is the home of the late great Cole Porter!

But Cole was smart enough to leave Peru and that was many years ago.

Default Peru

I was born in Peru and my grandparents lived there until they passed away a few yrs. ago. I personally don't think there is much to do there in Peru and not good choices for shopping either. The town depresses me and I'm not planning on visiting there anytime too soon. We live just north of Indy and there is much more to do around here. It takes about an hour and a half to drive from Carmel area to Peru. The air museum is ok if you love airplanes, but I was bored there very quickly.

One of the fun things to do is to drive down to Bunker Hill, and watch the convicts through the big fence...whoopee! Hey Southside, maybe they can help in your search for meatballs.

My husband is running for Mayor here in Peru. There are a couple of things that are very important about living here. One, our crime rate is extremely low, making this a very safe place to raise children. Secondly, the cost of homes is very low. You can buy a decent 4 bedroom home here for 50 - 60k and up. We are 20 minutes for Kokomo which is a great place to shop, but we are in the midst of revitalizing Peru and will soon have more shopping options here. Anyone wanting to know more can email me at
