Cool Any Reason NOT to move to Evansville??

Or the surrounding area?? We're in our 40's, have military pensions, and have good careers, No kids, don't need anyone to entertain us. Looking for negatives here. Everything we've seen is pretty positive. We'd really appreciate honest opinions here, not bitter 30 year olds still living in mom's basement!!

I am going to go out on a limb and say that what I think of as a negative are going to be different from you. If you are looking for an inexpensive no frills town, Evansville is your place. I think for me, the thing I dislike about Evansville is the lack of interesting stuff to do other than bowling and movies. However, I have friends and family in the area, so I keep busy without that stuff, but it would be nice to visit a comedy club or see some quality sports. To me, the Otters and High School sports serve their purpose, but they don't cut it for me. I enjoyed the BlueCats, but like most ventures such as that, it went unsupported by the community and failed. From reading your posts, I don't think any of this is relevant to you.

There are not alot of local flavor in Evansville. Local restaurants exist, but they are not as prevelant as other cities. It would also be nice to get a cup of coffee from place other than Starbucks; or a donut that doesn't taste dry and flavorless such as the ones from Donut Bank. Again, I gather that none of this pretains to you.

One thing that might, is the mass transit travel options. Evansville Regional is expensive and only has a few direct flights. Greyhound, unless they changed, has only one route through Evansville; it runs between St. Louis and Nashville or something if memory serves. They may have changed it, but when I was in school, I wanted to visit family in Michigan without driving. Greyhound was not an option because they have no routes out of Evansville unless you want to visit Southern Illinois or Western KY into Tennessee.

They are ripping up the Lloyd Expressway at Fulton Ave. This is will a traffic inconvenience for a few years; but no reason to not move there.

Parts of Evansville flood alot when it rains because the sewers are out of date.

If you want to seek out organic type groceries, you options are limited; though most national chains are starting to offer more.

Not sure if this is any help to you at all or not, but its all I got right now.

Now that I think about it; I don't like the weather. More specifically, the fact that is desn't snow very much. I HATE the fact that the threat of 2 inches of snow throws the town into a frenzy.

Evansville is also seismically active.

These are all pretty minor things though. Except the earthquake thing. If the New Madrid ever pops, look out!

DC is right; it's a matter of what's important to you.

Evansville, as most cities of its size, lacks more than a smattering of fine dining, Broadway-type shows, upscale shopping and hip nightlife. Not that they can't be found, but you have to look hard. If these are daily necessities for you, you'll be disappointed. If these are only occassional needs, be glad we have St, Louis, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Nashville all within a two to three hour drive.

This is very much an overgrown small town, which makes it a great place to be a parent, and exciting as dirt if you're a young person.

Over that past decade, we've made many strides in fixing the urban decay. We got rid of the mayor who was trying to force a baseball stadium down our throats to the exclusion of any other project, and got on the stick with wireless technology and the highway infrastructure.

So take it for what you will. I love it, but I can't give a lot of honest criticism to anyone who's bored silly, except to say see you in 20 years, because you may be back.

BTW, as to New Madrid, if it blows, everyone from Evansville to St.Louis to Memphis is screwed,
