My family is considering a job in New Haven. I know nothing about the town, except that it seems to be an outcropping of Fort Wayne. I have a nine year old daughter. What are the best housing and schooling options for us within a reasonable (15 minute drive) distance of the 46774 area code? Also, what is public transport like? I have found some helpful information on some other posts; they all seem to point toward the west side of town and New HAven is east, correct? We are interested in older, more established neighborhoods. Again, any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

There's a thread on this topic already at:
Considering relocating to the Ft. Wayne area My recommendation is to visit that thread and follow-up with any additional questions. Overall, New Haven isn't an ideal part of NE Indiana to move to these days. It is on the East side of Fort Wayne (you ought to do a quick search of maps.google.com to center upon the zipcode and view both the "map view" (so you can see the train tracks) and the "hybrid view" (so you can see the roads and development). Unfortunately, in New Haven moreso than other places in Fort Wayne, hearing train whistles at all hours is a way of life. I know the locals and my friends that live there say they just don't notice as they're used to it - but make no mistake they are loud and will penetrate your home. In terms of business development when you visit you will understand, it's not devoid of businesses the majority of them are old is all. If you research the schools in NH (various online places such as greatschools.net - http://www.greatschools.net/city/New_Haven/IN ) you'll quickly realize in comparison to the public schools on the SW side of Fort Wayne, well there isn't any comparison - NH public schools are in need of improvement. You may want to consider taking a look at the www.census.gov site and view the maps they have available for the vicinity of FW and NH - you'll see the distribution of wealth, education, pop growth, and other key attributes that pretty much speak for themselves once you see them. I don't think you should consider turning down the job offer in that area as much as you will want to consider living a short distance away and commuting in to work - one recommendation I have would be living in NE Fort Wayne in one of the nice neighborhoods there nearby the 930/Coliseum Blvd which you could use to bring you into NH from home. NE Fort Wayne has private school options you may want to consider. Overall, you will want to visit FW and NH before you decide anything. Continue browsing the posts here about Fort Wayne and New Haven as well and make note of places to see. |

I'd certainly have to agree with MBUSZU about following the previously mentioned threads. There are many subdivisions in the N.E. area of FtW that are very nice, and only minutes from downtown NH. That and the home prices in the NE side of town are 15 - 20% less than they are in either the NW or SW areas. If you decide to live in either the NW or SW areas, expect a minimum of a 30 minute commute, more depending on the time of day. I've lived in both the SE and NE areas. As a rule the NE is a nice area than the SE. (IMHO) But you'll have to decide. At any rate, welcome! I think the greater FtW area is a great place to live and work.
