Don't forget that Amtrak shares lines with freight trains, that take precedent over passenger trains. That could be some/most of the issue there.

I didn't know that. that could be the problem. I usually hear the train arrives on average 5 to 10 minutes late which isnt to bad.

My brother has tried to take the train the other direction (Portage to Chicago) twice now. The first time it was 3 hours late (the other passengers told us that that was completely normal and that one needs to call ahead) and the second time it was at least 11 hours late (I say "at least" because once we heard that news I loaded him into a car and drove him to Madison to take the bus!). I have been told that the problem this way is the Dakotas and that area with frequent weather issues and freight issues.

I don't like to drive in Chicago if I can avoid it... so it would be nice if there were a convenient train. Is there a Park and Ride in South Bend? Would that still be Amtrak or is it a metro line?

Thanks for all the feed back. It sounds like a lot of people would like to see a more convenient route to Chicago from Fort Wayne....
