Reloc from Vegas to Middlebury

I'm not aware of much flooding along the St. Joseph River, don't quote me. Last winter, the Tippecanoe river devastated some areas and we here in beautiful Columbus had a 500 year flood last June ... water flows south eh?
Fishing ... well ... there are lots and lots of lakes around and you won't be far away from Lake Michigan. Potato Creek SP has good fishing.
Farmers markets ... dude, it's Amish country, there are farm stands EVERYWHERE! It's really great too because a lot of them are honor pay, so be cool ok? I used to get fresh veggies and fresh eggs by helping myself to what I needed and leaving money in the jar, signing my name to say thank you. Same with bread ... again, there are a lot of Amish bake shops.
Mishawaka is nice, more urban than Middlebury.
This past season, I planted my tomatos in May and harvested starting in July ... I'll attach a photo of one of my many pickings. The bottom of my freezer is full of tomatos now, YUM! I picked the last of my cucumbers in August. This is in Southern Indiana mind you. My parents up by where you are moving to, had a heck of a time because of the cold snaps during planting season.

I will be patient, promise. Oh good Lord...thanks for the visual, I could eat the entire plate full and go back for more. Do you realize there are ppl here who have never had a home grown tomoato, ever...very sad!
I will abide by the honor system and fully appreciate it. The Amish life style is what attracted me to this area, well, and tomatoes I will be greatly dissapointed if I can't garden. My husband has promised me that if this move goes through, I can stay home, be a dogmom and garden....
Speaking of dogs, is anyone involved in canine rescue? I have done Basset rescue in TX., MD & now NV and imagine I will continue where ever I may go.
Thanks everyone, have a great weekend...I'll be back!

I'm sure there are plenty of opportunities to be a rescue home ... you get a star for the day! You could probably hook up with an Animal Hospital and they could refer to a group.
I don't like eating tomatos ... I just like growing and cooking with them.

Gee...thanks! All rescue groups need more ppl who are willing to lookout for and care for the abandonded pups, they just break my heart. This is Mooch... ...the Aussie
And Ralphie...the Basset
When we moved from MD to NV, I striped my tomoato plants down and made some killler marinara sauce , froze it in zip-lock bags and transported it cross-country in dry ice...I refused to give up the first home grown tomatoes I had had in 12 yesars.
How about the tornado season there? I lived in tornado alley, TX for 12 yrs and came close a few times, but no hits...TG! In general, are the warning systems effective? That's not something we had down south.

You'll hear sirens more than you will actually get hit ... it's completely random and shouldn't hinder your choice in moving here. Just get a house with a basement and a weather radio ...

Reloc from Vegas to Middlebury/Newspapers/Waste Removal
[SIZE=2]Anyone from South Bend east to La Grange...from what I've been able to find, the newspapers that would cover these areas are the SB Tribune, Goshen News and The Elkhart Truth...are there any others?
Also, who is the waste removal company in the above area's, Republic or Allied (merged)? Is this service included with the water? Is there city water/sewers or wells and septic tanks? Can anyone give me a ball park figure for trash removal?
Thanks!

patience! you have the media outlets covered. as for trash removal ... can't help you on that once. each neighborhood may have contracts with garbage companies, at which point, the fees would be handled via an association. you may very well not get that piece of information until you are ready to move.

Hi, Welcome to the Middlebury area! I live and work in the area, would be very happy to help you find a place. Pretty much every where in Middlebury is low crime and country like settings are everywhere. <please take this information to a direct message>

If you live in town, I would need a day or so to find out what city of Middlebury's rates are. I live in the county and pay $40 per quarter for a medium large size trash can they furnish and pick up once a week. Recycling unfortunately is all up to you around here. They put bins out at various locations and its up to you to get the bottles, newspapers etc to them.
If you live in the city limits, you would have water and sewer charges I believe, but most folks are on private wells and septic systems.
I lived in SW FL for 24 yrs and lets just say that I have yet to pay in heating/electricity costs for one month what I paid for AC in FL. My electric billl usually runs about $55-60 for the lights, clothes dryer and pumping water. My gas bill ranges from $25 in summer to $153 last month. I have gas water heater, cooking and heat. The gas company does do budget plans, but I prefer to see those $25 or less bills!

"the paper," from goshen, is fun to check out, esp. the "Speak Out" section and classified ads.
