You were raised here and have never had sugar cream pie? Come on over you don't know what you have missed.
I don't have a problem with the state rep wanting something from his area promoted isn't that why we elect them to rep/promote our areas? Now say there is a plant producing Philly cheesesteaks in his area and he wants that for our state food. No way that isn't something that came from Indiana areas.
I still think it is a waste of tax payer's money and time when we have serious issues they can't seem to handle. Fun needs to be sprinkled in at times but this isn't the time in my opinion.

Hubby was raised in NW Indiana and has never heard of it. I looked up the ingredients and it looks like a recipe for sugar diabetes! Can't they come up with something that might represent the whole state? My husband votes for rubarb/strawberry pie.

Sugar creme pie just doesn't sound good to me .... isn't Indiana known for persimmons?

Yes it is. I wonder if anyone knows of a recipe. Hubby is voting for a black walnut ice cream pie now! Do you think he's hungry?

Something with Black walnuts. I believe walnut trees are found throughout the state. Even rhubarb/strawberry makes more sense to me. Sorry Dgurl--never heard of persimmon pudding until I ended up in Southern IN.
I think wild blackberries, or maybe they are black raspberries, grow naturally throughout the state. Blackberry pie????

I agree, wild blackberries or black raspberries.
As a kid we would eat them right off the tree, they were so sweet.
Not sure if there a lot of those trees still around though.

Chickey--I think you're thinking about mulberries, a different thing altogether, if they grew on a tree. The berries I'm thinking about grow on a thorny bush, often on the edges of wooded areas or near old farm fences, etc.

I grew up in north-central Indiana. I love, love, love sugar cream pie! In fact, I just might have to make one very soon!

I remember the big mulberry trees we had in our yard when growig up. When I moved to Texas I had 1 on the property there also. The ones in Indiana seemed to tast much better.
I do not remember sugar creme pie but I do recall that rubarb and strawberry/rubarb pies were every where when in season.
This is starting to make me want to hit some of the fall festival and food fairs around Goshen and Nappanee this coming year, thats where you can find the best ones.
