Might be relocating somewhere near Columbus...
Hi everyone,
My fiancee and I might have to relocate to IN from the Metro-Detroit area...another tragic automotive engineer story here. We are young (23-24) with only 2 dogs...no kids yet.
I'd like to keep my drive within 30 minutes of work, and have seen some houses for rent in Nashville, Trafalgar, and Franklin. Unfortunately an apartment won't do with our dogs, and I'm not looking to buy a home right away...I'd be renting my house in MI if I relocated, so at least I won't get stuck with that mortgage.
Can anyone tell me about these areas? Any info would be helpful. I know the cost of living is lower than in MI, and they aren't going to slash my salary, so I'll have that on my side if I go. I like having a Best Buy and a Target nearby? Is this feasible? I truly am a city boy. Also, are there any bad areas / high traffic roads / or any other info that I should know about? I don't want to be stuck in a horrible commute every day.
**Also, if anyone can recommend any other areas nearby Columbus, it would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks so much.
Christian

Errr.....where is work?
If you are looking for "city" you won't be happy in Nashville or Trafalger!
Franklin and Columbus are both larger towns. Franklin is closer to Indianapolis (and the shopping in Greenwood).
Columbus has a Target, but no Best Buy.

Greenwood would have all your bases covered in terms of shopping. You'll be right on the cusp of a 30-45 minute commute to Columbus ... I'm going to go ahead and assume that work will be in Columbus.
Don't know much about the rental markets though. You could peruse the Indianapolis star ( IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star | Indianapolis news, sports, business, community, entertainment, yellow pages and classifieds. Serving Indianapolis, Indiana) or the Republic ( Denied:1up! Software ()) for listings.

Thanks for the info.
Yes...work is in southern Columbus, near I-65 and W 450 South.
I see there are some properties for rent for a good price in Franklin. My question is: how is traffic / rush hour for an every day commute up and down 65? I don't want to be stuck in a traffic backup every morning / afternoon if I can help it. Is this a really high traffic area / road? Gosh I hope not because it looks like my best option...
It seems like Franklin has kind of a "suburb" atmosphere? I'd like to find a place with a fenced yard. not too much else matters because I'm only renting...

Thx for the info everyone. A couple more questions:
I am a guitar player that plays in a blues / rock type band. Are there bars around these areas that would have such a band? I'd have to leave my band if I moved...but I'd definitely find some others to jam with! Not sure if anyone will know this...but it's worth a shot.
Any other info about the Franklin / Greenwood area would be great!!
Thanks.

There are bars and bands all over the area. I know that a new bar is opening in Columbus in the next few months that wants to hire blues bands ...

I work near the same area by I-65, and also play bass in a blues context.

Sorry I am late to chime in on this.
I lived in Franklin and really liked it a lot. If I were to move back to Indiana that is where I would want to be. It isn't all that large but you are really close to Greenwood and Indy.
A little about my experience in Franklin. I lived on Walnut Street, it is in the area where the old homes are. I really enjoyed that area because I could easily go for walks with my dogs and could also walk down to my favorite bar on Jefferson, The Jeff Street Pub, over to Ritters to get some ice cream, or to my favorite restaurant, Richards Kitchen. If you like walking with your dogs there is a really nice greenway in Franklin.

Franklin is a good city in Indiana. About halfway between Columbus and Indianapolis. Good schools, quality of life, good road network, pretty nice area and a lot of younger people with roots and professionals coming down that way. Its another big corridor in Indiana and its growing by leaps and bounds.

Thanks for all the info everyone.
I have spotted a couple of houses for rent in Franklin with fenced yards, so I'm watching them closely. Hopefully I'll find something out in the next couple of weeks as to whether or not I will be moving...
I've also spotted a couple of places in Whiteland / New Whiteland for rent. Can anyone provide any info on this area compared to Franklin?
Also, if anyone has any good places to look for properties to rent, I'd really appreciate some good links. I'm looking specifically for houses with fenced yards, not for apartments or the like.
Thanks!
