<mod cut>
I have done some research, and have chosen Ballard or manual for his school choices, Manual being first, with an under 20 percent enrollment of black kids, and if the JCPS wants to give me trouble about it, they will pay for his eschool. I may not be able to send him back, he has not left our house all weekend, and has been physically sick.
This has really ruined my sons eagerness to go to school. He went from an outgoing trusting, sweet kid to a frightend young man who does not even want to leave the house. I cannot wrap my head around a school system that feels it is OK for a kid to be scared in school.

I moved over from Louisville and commuted from So. Indiana to Lou. for about 6 yrs. It's not a bad commute right now & will be getting better with the addition of the bridges (someday!). As for Floyd vs. Clark schools, Jeffersonville has some of the higher ranked schools (sorry to hear that someone had a bad experience or heard some negative comments about Jeff but it doesn't appear factual). I didn't see you mention what grade level, but if you go to GreatSchools.net you can search for all cities and grade levels. They'll rank them and tell you how many students they have etc. They'll also provide for you all the contact info you need to call and ask specific questions. I have personally heard wonderful things about Utica Elementary School in Jeff., and also New Albany High School. I see a handful of cute properties available in Floyds Knobs in your price range, but no doubt there are many many more in Jeffersonville. I love the growth Southern Indiana is experiencing and find that it's a more rewarding community than Louisville is to live in.

Relocating from Southern Indiana
I recently moved to the Chicago area from New Albany,IN. I was born and raised on the East end of Louisville, KY and moved to the sunny side of life Seven years ago with my husband. I love New Albany it is a nice place to raise a family with Five star school systems and great shopping centers.
My husband was promoted to the Chicago area in May or we would not ever have moved from the area. We do have a house for rent in the area if you find yourself there.
It is a three bedroom,LR,FM Large eat in kitchen. Located off of Charlestown Rd on a nice secluded 1 acres lot that backs to a pond and woods with Silver Creek running through. It is in the Grantline, Scribner, New Albany High School district with bus pick up at the end of the street. These are all 5 star schools where my children spent 9 years and loved it.
If you or anyone is interested just reply back.
Good Luck to ya!

just because waggener is in ST. Matthews does not automatically make it a safe school. The city's GED high school is run out of that particular building and can only help to attract the overall low quality students. Manual is almost impossible to get into anyway and is most likely out of the question. Ballard and Male are great schools with normal students; black, white, green, grey.

If that isn't racist I don't know what is. ALL Louisville schools vary, to try to make assumptions for EVERY school in Louisville is absurd and the easy, cop out thing to do. Not only that but you categorize EVERY black student as preying on "poor frightened *NON* black students". Check out Portland, quite a few white gang bangers and thugs out there yet...only black people are categorized as thugs and gang bangers. And what about the white students that go into school and open fire on everyone? But that's not a real problem because they're white...right?
Another thing that REALLY aggravates me is that when people of color (meaning black, Latina/o, Asian, indigenous, mixed race) talk about racism, they get the "pulling the race card" assumption but a white person comes across ONE incident involving race, they use THAT incident to make excuses for them "becoming" racists. When and if I have kids, I will make sure they are not raised in the "Kentuckiana" area, especially S. Indiana...I came from a diverse neighborhood in J-Town and I plan on making sure they are raised in one with more open minded people who don't believe that all black people are like the rap videos they've seen (or believe any other racist stereotype).

I, for one, wish that a certain Half-Baked Hater would go somewhere far, far, away. Just don't go back to Corydon-I've always been treated decently there, and don't want to put up with your racist crap, when I go back for my next visit. Don't bother to respond, as I am an educated "One Of Those Kind Of People", and suspect that you would have to be considered completely unarmed, were we to engage in a battle of wits.

one woman's humble opinion
schools never ever ever rebuke bullies there have been bullies since schools began i hope your child learns to handle bullies because that is the way it is if you are not part of the right group, the right this or the right that school caqn be a living hell but we choose to look at childhood as idyllic
thoughts?

Have you thought about living in Kentucky close to Ft Knox?
The schools in that area are good, lower crime rate from what I understand, and it's a nice little community.
Actually I was hoping that hubby will be stationed there soon, since our other choices are not as appealing.

We actually have a beautiful home for lease or purchase in one of the safest neighborhoods I know. It is 3 minutes from the elementary school, we are on a very kid friendly cul-de-sac. The home is 2400 sq feet with the basement it is 3200. Would you like more info on New Albany or our home?

I'm getting relocated to New Albany very soon and I'm interested in buying a house in a nice neighborhood within a good school district. Do you know if New Albany has a montessori school or good preschools? I'm also interested in hearing more about the home for sale.

GypsySoul -
Last year i was looking for a house in either Louisville area or Southern Indianawhen i worked in Louisville.
True, rush hour traffic on I-65 into/out of Louisville SUCKS.
Traffic on I-64 coming into Louisville, from the west, isn't bad.
My home price range was very similar to yours. I also have the same feeling about schools for my children.
I looked strongly in these areas:
Southern Indiana:
Floyds Knobbs
Georgetown
Greenville
Lanesville
Corydon
I found all of these areas to be affordable, have decent schools, mostly white, and a fairly easy drive to Louisville.
Living any further south than Corydon seems to be a LONG drive into Louisville since there are only 2 main bridges (I-65 and I-64) to cross the Ohio River.
I'm sure there is another bridge at the bottom of Indiana, but driving all over hell and creation really isn't my thing. Traffic on the south side of "The Outer Loop" in Louisville sucks too.
Louisville Metro Area:
Damn near anything in Oldham County.
Taylorsville
Bloomfield
Eminence
Waddy
Oldham county has good schools, but the people generally seem "Snobby" to me. A lot of the upper class in this area, so finding a home in the 120's might be a challenge. You really gotta dig to find them.
Taylorsville is a tiny little town southeast of Lousiville. Maybe 10-15 miles from the city. Easy commute. Affordable housing too. Schools are smaller, and the people seemed friendly. This town really fit the bill for me.
Bloomfield is even further south/southeast of Taylorsville. It's out in the country. Nice small town though. Affordable homes, nice people. Not a clue on the schools though.
Eminence, is east/northeast of Louisville. Tiny town. I liked it.
Stay out of Jefferson County (Which Lousiville is in). $120,000 doesn't go far there. Some really awesome homes, but sadly they are usually in crappy neighborhoods, or in good neighborhoods but rediculous prices.
St. Matthews has been mentioned a few times, but again, overpriced. The people think their $h!t doesn't stink too. I just got a bad vibe in that area. Not my kinda people.
Shelbyville, to the east of Louisville is "touch and go". It has some really great and affordable places, BUT, sadly, the "Bad Mexicans" are moving in. This was enough to get me to stay out of that area.
Waddy is east of Louisville on I-64. Pretty tiny. Affordable area though. No clue on anything else.
Good luck in your hunt.
