That has always been a problem with the Kokomo and Muncie areas. When the auto makers are down due to economy or strike it pulls these areas down pretty quickly to.

Kokomo is your run-of-the-mill manufacturing town. There are many solidly middle-class areas of town where the housing stock is in good shape. There are also many areas where it doesn't appear as nice. Fear is running rampant through Kokomo over the future of Chrysler and Delphi. Consequently, there's a tremendous amount of homes for sale. The real estate market there is really bad.

grmasterb gave you a fair reading on Kokomo right now.
If you are looking for a medical job they have a few hospitals, lots of doctor's offices and they have junior college that does well. All kind of eatery joints to choose from if you are looking into the food industry area. But the auto industry does effect that town like any others that have a strong factory base.

Indiana University-Purdue University is not a "junior college"> Kokomo will be just fine for at least the next 20 years due to the retirees from the automotive industry. Taxes are low in comparison to other areas in the state also. I live just north of Kokomo in Miami county and have incredibly low property taxes due to Grissom Air Force Base building Maconaquah Schools facility. Kokomo has always had the most affordable housing in the country. I believe it is because of the efficiency that has been bred into the area by automotive automation.

Kokomo is in the top 10 cities that are expected to not make it through the recession, however, I like Kokomo and think its a great little town. Westfield, Noblesville, and Carmel are not far from Kokomo (maybe 1/2 hour - 45min drive) so if you dont mind the drive you could always commute if you couldnt find a job in Kokomo. I work in Carmel with several people that live in Kokomo and commute. There are a few colleges there. Indiana University-Kokomo, Ivy Tech-Kokomo, and Indiana Wesleyan I believe. And they also have a Hospital there. Pretty much everything you need except jobs.
