Well, thank you everyone for the info and the calming words.... We lived in Iowa City for a while and believe me... I always took the sirens seriously even though people who had lived there forever told me that they never got tornados. Long story short... a couple of months after we moved away a tornado touched down right up the street from where we had lived!

I am not sure why (I grew up in hurricane territory not tornado territory), but I have always been nervous about tornados.

Anyhow... I guess it is a good thing to have a healthy respect for these kinds of things!

Thanks again!

I grew up in earthquake territory and I was always less worried about them than tornados. My husband grew up in NW Indiana and would rather live in tornado country than earthquake country. Go figure.

I'm trying to be brave!!

Where are you in Indiana? NOAA's records vary by region, some are more in depth than others.

I grew up(At least my pre-adolescent years) in Blackhawk County in Iowa and we moved to NJ after a tornado did irreparable damage to our farm in '66. The same tornado was bearing down on a neighboring farm's house but dissipated less than a half mile before it made it there. Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw.

While this is still tornado territory, it's not as much so as the plains states. Some states like Arkansas down south have gotten it worse than we have in recent years and there aren't many places east of the Rockies that are truly "immune" to them.

I think the thing with tornadoes as opposed to hurricanes is, you don't usually have much of a warning, maybe 10-20 minutes tops and they can appear out of what looks like just a really bad storm if the conditions are right. With a hurricane you've got plenty of advance warning even if they develop not terribly far from the coast because they move very slow by comparison.

I'm not concerned about where I am now (northwest Indiana) but I would like to know about Lawrence and Orange counties which is the area where we might be moving if things work out. I know there was a tornado near Bedford (Lawrence county) recently.

Here you go. This site has information on Orange County. The white terms are clickable links inside the graphic:

Tornadoes of Central Kentucky and Southern Indiana

This site has some info on Lawrence County:

Central Indiana County Tornado Archives

Lawrence County Tornadoes

As I mentioned, they don't all have the same sort or amount of information. I believe it's based on what the local offices provide.

If you're curious about any specific towns, just go to NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , type in a city/state and scroll down. Near the bottom is a section that has "Additional Forecasts and Information". Information on past weather can be found under "Local Climatology". For our area it's under "Climate Information". I believe it will say "Past Weather", something of that nature for some.

As an example, here's Bedford's forecast page:

7-Day Forecast for Latitude 38.86°N and Longitude 86.52°W (Elev. 528 ft)

Here's the "Local Climate" page:

Additional Local Climate Info

On the left of that page is another "Local Climate" page which takes you to the Indy site:

National Weather Service Climate

Clicking on the "Local Data/Records" tab gives you information for the region in general:

National Weather Service Climate

NOAA's info for some smaller towns/areas really make you jump through hoops to get some information. It would be nice if they were more uniform but that's the way it is.
