Default The Elkhart Project: MSNBC

MSNBC is focusing on elkhart as the poster child for the economic recession. they're doing a surprisingly extensive project on how the area has been affected.

I think this is a terrific project. I've been peaking in on MSNBC.

Spent some time up there a couple weeks ago - met a couple people, talked w/ them about the community, its pain and its hopes... the town has been hurt, but there seems to be a good spirit. Just as long as they can weather this mess, w/o going into a hard-to-recover-from spiral, it'll be alright.

it's pretty good, isn't it? i'm wondering how long they'll be running stories, it seems like a pretty long-term project.

the story about the poor woman who was about to lose the last furniture store in town was sad; i bought my kitchen table there.

One of the agents in our real estate office is working with the MSNBC folks to do a spot on the real estate activity/short sales/foreclosures in the area.

I grew up in Elkhart County, so I have been hearing about how we need to "diversify" all my life. The problem with the downturn in RVs now versus the downturn in the 70's is we had allot more depending on the factory wages than we did in the 70s and even 80s. There were allot of family farms still intact here then and many of the Amish/Mennonites who used to farm ended up leaving them for the higher money in the factorys. So the impact now is much greater than it was then.

On a bright note, the first time homebuyers credit is getting buyers moving in the real estate market. Its mainly in the under $150 prices that are moving...but its still forward motion, and I am encouraged by that.

Shadow, I am hurt, you came to my neck of the woods and didnt even holler HI??
