Bloomington is my favorite place in Southern Indiana, the rolling hills on the way up there from where I live in Vincennes are beautiful.
I lived in Indy for a research internship this past summer and that comes a close second. Coming from Chicago, I was delighted to see my 650 dollars a month go towards a fully furnished one bedroom instead of an unfurnished crappy studio near Lake Mich (though the seaside view is still awesome
Indy is a great city on the rise;canal walk, mass ave, circle centre, etc. I would love to go to IUMS there!

Since we choose to move here, I'm going to have to go with the south central/southern part of the state. Probably beginning south of Martinsville-where the hills begin. This would include Greene, Owen, Brown, Monroe, Lawrence Counties. The hills and trees are beautiful as is the quiet. For quality of life my vote, of course, is for Bloomington/Monroe County.
The irony, to me, of living in this beautiful part of the state is that those people that have lived here a lifetime don't necessarily appreciate it. I live near Lake Monroe. The number of people that litter the county roads is disgusting. It's irritating to see it on a daily basis. When it's the dead of winter I know it's not people coming from out of town that are throwing their fast food wrappers and beer bottles out the car windows.
Having grown up in Lake County I know there is nothing that compares to standing on the edge of Lake Michigan and looking out at the water and, sometimes, the Chicago skyline. A different kind of beauty and a different kind of lifestyle.

Having lived and travel quite a bit in this state for ~4 years, must say that the southern part of IN is very scenic, w/ the softly rolling hills and clear streams. However, the area here in the NE part due to the remnants of the glaciers also has some rolls to the land, albeit not to that same extent of course - yet, there is a softness to its charm, esp. w/ the communities herein. Indy is nice for a city, w/ quite a bit to offer in the culture/shopping/entertainment/concert avenue. Ft Wayne, for a smaller city is also not so bad - nice zoo, shopping, hockey!, and a lot of restaurants and pubs, along w/ various festivals here and throughout the entire area/state. The Dunes are very cool, first time experienced them, was quite amazing. As with just about any/all areas in this country, there are many places that are 'best', just takes an open mind and eye, and positive attitude to appreciate and see it all. I say this to remind myself of such at times, when I regret moving from my beloved Ozarks and even from the Chattanooga area, w/ its waterfalls, mountains, caves, streams, etc.
