Jensta is on a distinguished road
Our family is considering moving to Fort Wayne, Indiana from an upper class neighborhood in the Detroit area.

My husband my accept a job in Bulter, IN...but we are thinkin Ft Wayne would where we'd live.

I have done research, and my general impression is that I would want to live in the SW as opposed to the NE if I want a more modern feel.

So far in my research, the SW area, specifically Alboit, seems to be the closest fit for us.

Any thoughts on NE vs SW?

Also, I keep hearing about all the trains (whistle blowing at all hours of the night) that are disruptive throughout Ft Wayne. Is that really an issue?

Any suggestions, input, or information about the ideal place to live for two highly educated people with 2 kids (7 & 9) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

disruptive trains aren't too much of an issue in Alboit. From the sounds of it, you did your research, Alboit is definitely the area you want to live in with all those specifications. However, South West Fort Wayne is VERY suburban feeling, to the point of totally bland. Just my 2 cents, however, I am more of a West Central kind of guy.

Its Aboite- pronounced Uh- Boy-t. Search SW Allen for MANY posts on the schools, area comparison, etc. West Central is terrific if you are single, but for public schools, and safety, not so much. I lived there with my mom as a preteen in the 80's and had no friends my age there. Loved it in college.Southwood Park( near Rudisill) is better with kids for areas with character. I've lived there too. But for public schools- its Homestead , Carroll or Leo districts at the top of the list. All the grade schools that feed into them are good.

If you call yourself "highly educated" in conversation, you will be happiest in Aboite more than likely- but it will help to spell and say it right!

Best of luck! fabumom07

safety? In West Central? Yeah, those starving artist thugs are just in droves there.

It's Fort Wayne, as long as you aren't walking around Eden Green at 2 am, you are fine anywhere.

When I was a 11 and my mom and I lived there, there were safety concerns- an area rapist. I was also propositioned coming home from school one day. Just my 2 cents. As young woman I lived there and and a great time . Some areas are more child friendly than others, and the artists aren't the problem, its just that its closer to downtown. I like to clue parents in because thats what I would want if I were moving my family to a new area.

Jensta,

Aboite is nice, not allot of character, but lots of new or nearly new spiffy homes. I lived on the edge of Aboite, near Time Corners for 5 yrs and loved it! It was convenient, yet felt rural. I did hear the trains at night, but they were so far off, it was like a pleasant background noise, not disruptive at all. You didnt mention if your kids will be going to private school, but Canterbury was just around the corner from my house on Sun Valley Drive. There were never many houses for sale in that development, but you might at least take a drive there when you get to town.

On the other hand the NE side has lots of new development and it will be much less of a commute for your husband if you live there. The area around Dupont Road has several nice subdivisions. Also might want to check out the Huntertown area, which is just north of Fort Wayne.

Good luck and welcome to Hoosierland...you will find Fort Wayne a family friendly city, I still miss the outstanding library system there!
