Ligonier is a small small town. Bigger towns close by would be Goshen, Warsaw and Fort Wayne. I can't say anything bad as I've only ever driven through or attended softball games there. Here's a link to their Chamber of Commerce:

I worked in Ligonier so I would not buy or live there. I would suggest Lagrange or Topeka both of these towns are nice and lots of Amish and not far away. Shipshawana is another close town but very expensive.

Hope this helps

I lived in Ligonier,IN all my life, up until 2005 (I am 39). If you have work lined up, and you don't mind a small town (about 4,500) you will be fine. There are several apartment complexes in town also. Rent should be pretty reasonable. If you want a "night life", you will have to travel to a larger city, like Fort Wayne or South Bend. If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help if I can.
