There is a thread currently on the Iowa subforum titled "Cyclones vs. Hawkeyes?" The discussion, covering all sports, seems to very much confirm the notion that Iowa rules the state and that Iowa State takes a real back seat to the Hawkeye nation.

Seems to me that if Iowa is a state of extremes, Indiana is the opposite and is far more about the means. My impression is (and those of you in Indiana can confirm or refute it) the IU and Purdue share their state with a degree of equality that may be as strong as in any such set up in the nation.

If so, it could be that Purdue differed from other landgrant schools that were created after the original flagship university in their state. Purdue was born as a university and never went through college status. Add to that, Purdue was one of the founders of the Big Ten; IU joined later. And perhaps some of the quality might come from Purdue being in the more northern and urbanized Great Lakes oriented part of Indiana while IU is decidedly southern Indiana and part of that border between north and south that stretches on both sides of the Ohio.

Or, than again, I might be full of crap on all the above. But no matter how you dice it, IU doesn't have the power advantage that exists in most states, be it Iowa-Iowa St, OU-OK St, CU-Colo St, Wash-WSU, Ole Miss-Miss St. Purdue is the football school and IU and Purdue seem to share the roundball.

If I'm right, why do you folks in Indiana think that is true?

I'm going to give you the classic response......it depends. When it comes to basketball -- at least here in Indianapolis -- IU rules, with both Purdue and Butler getting a lot of attention. In fact, I'd bet that IU has an edge over Purdue statewide.

When it comes to football, however, Hoosiers fans are noticeably and understandably quiet. Boilers and Domers are noticeably more present here, along with a third noticable fan presence here -- THE Ohio State University.

I should have thought other schools like Butler or ND would get into the discussion. I was really interested in Indiana's two major public flagships in the sense that they have not only public interest but state wide appeal in the way that Ball or Ind St do not.

Well, you got my feel for the sports scene as it relates to those schools. Academically, I think most seem them as being on par but for different reasons (although both are rated highly for business).

If we are talking sports, and we are talking just IU and Purdue; then Indiana is without question the number one school; you would be crazy to think otherwise.

I think Purdue is to Indiana what Michigan State is to Michigan (except for the fact that IU is terrible in football).

IU and Purdue are balanced overall. You can get fantastic educations at both. Purdue tends to be more tech/engineering/ag focused. IU has the medical and law schools. As for sports .. it just depends. There for awhile, IU basketball was dominant, not so much now.

Purdue is more expensive, that's about it.

Although I don't technically live in Indiana; Niles is right on the border and tied much more closely to Indiana than Michigan. With that said . . . M GO BLUE. My second favorite team - whoever is playing Notre Dame.

If I had to choose IU or Purdue, I would go with IU. Great basketball history, they're not Michigan's rival, and I love the red-on-white color scheme.
