Default I'm moving - R there bad areas in South Bend?

Hi there, I'm moving to South Bend and don't know which areas are safe/not safe. I'm going to Notre Dame for grad school so I don't want to live so far away from campus. I'd like to rent a 2-3 bedroom house w/ garage, but I don't want to move to a scary area with a lot of break-ins. Any suggestions?

Default South Bend

As long as you stay near ND you should be fine. If you can try to stay more north or west of ND. South is ok but not the best. When you find a place let me know the addy and I can tell you if it is ok or not.

South Bend is trash. I grew up in Elkhart (20 minutes away). All trash. Drugs, violence, murders, rapes-that sums up the area. Go to college, stay on campus, and get away as fast as you can

I don't think SouthBend is trash as long as you stay away from the west side. Mishawaka is also a good area and close to ND. You could check out SouthBends crime rate areas before picking a place to live. It's not any different from any other town.

That's entirely unfair. What city doesn't have trash, drugs, violence, murders and rapes?

One of my coworkers grew up there, he doesn't talk down about it and as crazy as he was growing up, he's still alive.

Please quit speaking trash of my home state.

Going by this board, you'd think I'd either be a rapist, murderer, druggy, or victim of aforementioned person of low moral fiber since I'm from the west side of South Bend. None of that was the case for me personally, but it did happen occasionally.

It's not as bad as the rap it's getting, but I'd take it on a neighborhood by neighborhood basis.

I would recommend looking in the Granger area (north). I grew up in Granger in the Knollwood area and did not have any major crime in our neighborhood. Just stick to shopping in Mishawaka and lock your doors and you'll be fine.

Default Housing around ND

The area immediately south of ND is quite nice, including homes along ND Ave plus the highly desirable Harder Heights area. A private developer will be breaking ground on a new mxd retail/housing development just south of campus to create a student-oriented shopping area (plus more options for the crush of people on home football weekends). There are alot of rental houses along Corby st, between ND Ave and Niles, generally rented by seniors moving off campus, so there are loud parties and ocasional break-ins of student houses which have been left empty for extended periods over holiday breaks. The area known as the "Triangle," around Marquette St and Wakewa, is also quite nice, with the possibility of some rentals close to campus.

Some older apartment buildings, and apartment rentals in Victorians, can be found downtown -- about 1-2 miles from campus.

There are bunches of newer apt compexes in Mishawaka and Granger, perfectly fine and ordinary but require a drive to campus.

Like many older towns, there is a perception among people who live in newer developments that the older sections of town are dangerous. There is certainly some violent crime, which tends to be concentrated in some parts of the west side and south side.

Good luck with your move
