well, alot of librarians-to-be get their MLS at Indiana University, so you will be around a great many. As for punk, well, Bloomington has a very strong music scene of all kinds of music. I don't know if it is still around, but Uncle Fester's was always the place in town where touring punk bands played, but not the only place.

I was you! I went to library school in Bloomington and I was never bored. I don't know what clubs are still there, I graduated in 1992, but you won't have any problem finding venues or fitting in! Rock on fellow bibliophile.
Bloomington is a typical college town, lots of converted homes with apartments of various disaray and price ranges.
The IU main library is huge ... and there are 13 or so special libraries scattered all over campus ... I had a buddy who worked at the Kinsey Institute library ... he couldn't talk about his job at all, which I thought was cool!

This reminds me of a comment a librarian friend made. "There are more blue-haired librarians now than ever, and they're not all old."

You will love Bloomington. A great place for punk rockers. The video saloon is the hangout where punkers, indies, and even metalheads cohabitate in perfect harmony to escape the hoards of fratties, guidos, and general idiots.......

I don't know what pipe some of you have been smoking from, but there isn't much of a punk scene in Bloomington. At the very least, he will be looked down upon by anyone not like him, and categorized as just another misfit lost to society.
Bloomington USED to have a thriving music scene about 20-30 years ago. now it totally sucks.
I think you will be disappointed in the entertainment value Bloomington has to offer. I can't imagine you will make a living wage working at ANY of the libraries around here. The homeless have taken over the public library.
May be harsh, but it's all true.

I don't know about the library being taken over by the homeless, but I can understand that. However, I was in a band that toured all over the midwest and Bloomington was a great place to play each and every time. The music scene was, at least 2ish years ago, very open with all kinds of different genres playing at Uncle Fester's, Rhinos (thought that may have been longer ago, I get my tours with my different bands mixed up), lots of outdoor festivals, Collins Dorm Fest (at least I think that is what it was called), The Blue Bird, and tons of house parties. I can't believe that all of that is gone now.

Bloomington has made indie music mag features in recent years for having one of the hottest scenes in the country. Secretly Canadian, is one of the most highly regarded independent music labels out there, and Jagjaguwar is making tremendous gains. I dare say, from YeahMon's negative rant, one my question if he/she is a troll. I find it hard to believe the place has sunk as far as that since I listed visited, which was two months ago--back then it looked fine. Sleepy in the summertime, but still a great small city.
