Default subdivision of fort wayne

My husband and I are most likely moving to Fort Wayne, with our two young children, by the end of the summer. We've traveled there to house hunt a couple of times and have seen about 25 houses in the $150,000-200,000 price range. We like a few of the neighborhoods in NW, specifically the Pine Valley Country Club subdivision.

Does anyone have any other neighborhood suggestions or any comments on the pine valley sub? We're trying to get more house for our money and still be in a good school district, that's why we chose NW instead of SW.

On a different note...how come there aren't any Costcos in Fort Wayne?

Thanks,
Beth

You ought to also look at homes in the 46804 and 46814 zip codes (Southwest Fort Wayne). The 46804 zipcode has a ton of homes for sale in that price range right now (Whispering Meadows, Falls of Beaver Creek and Shorewood are just 3 of the 10 or so developments which you might want to look at). The schools in SW Allen County are excellent so that shouldn't be a deterant for you. Neighborhoods I would recommend would be ones nearby Highway 69's exits 102 and 105... there's great neighborhoods off of route 14, covington rd, aboite center, and west hamilton road. The nice thing about this vicinity is the proximity to the airport, the new main library, Jefferson Pointe mall, Lutherin Hospital and all the retail and restaurants you could ask for. Regarding bang for the buck real estate, both the NW and SW areas of Fort Wayne have the same builders... so you will not see price differentiation except when indeed something different is being offered.

There are 3 costcos in Indiana. 2 in Indianapolis, on the northside, and one in Merrillville. We are probably movng an hour south of Indianapolis and I'll be darned if I'm going to give up my Costco membership!!! If you love Costco, call them and see if they are planning on adding stores. Fort Wayne is ripe! I don't think there are any in Michigan or Ohio near Fort Wayne either ... major bummer.

One thing I've noticed, Hoosiers Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuv their Wal-Marts and Sam's Clubs.

I was in contact w/ Costco recently, they said there were no plans to build a Costco in the Ft. Wayne area. I agree that Ft. Wayne is ripe, and I asked about service to the tri-state MI/OH/IN area, looking to incorporate more of the broader population within those confines. It would be nice to have one in the FW area. Closest one I would go to would be in Chicago. I'd enjoy the scenery while my wife and I got the goods we needed. I don't care for Walmart or Sams Club, which is why I prefer Costco.
PS to Domer, I've enjoyed your by-line more and more every time I read it. Those Brits were a hoot.

Actually, there's a Costco in Merrillville, just off 65 & US 30, ... it would still be a hike, but I'd still make it once a month. Or, you can get on I-69 and get off on 82nd street in Indianapolis and come to my Costco! Costco is very finicky about where they open stores.

Best of luck!!

We looked at homes in Pine Valley when we found out we had to move here...the homes seemed old back then...13 yrs ago...and now they seem ancient...we started looking in SW allen county, at the time we found they had the best schools..and today they are still one of the best..NW allen county has good schools also..we found we could get around faster being in sw allen county...lots of people have moved here...but seems the traffic is worse in NW...We have been quite fortunate to have many stores open in our area since we moved here....all they need to add now is a Target! There are so many subdivisions in sw, something to suit all price ranges...Would love a Costcos here too...if anyone starts a petition to get one here I would gladly sign!! Im not a fan of Sams or Walmart either...By the way...someone said there was only one Office Depot in Ft Wayne...there are actually 3...one in sw, one by one of the best buys (and mall) and also one on the ne side off of 469! Good luck in your search for a home...at any rate, if you choose NE Allen County schools or SW Allen County schools, you wont go wrong...for Private schools...Canterbury would be the way to go.

I was just in touch with Costco and inquired about future store openings and they said that they weren't planning on any as of now, BUT, their real estate department is always documenting demand, so folks ... start emailing and calling. I think Costco would fit in Fort Wayne and it would attract folks from the tri-state area, similiar to the one in Merrillville. I know I've been sending begging emails to open a store in Greenwood ... I'll continue to be vigilant!

That depends on the Hoosier. I hate Wal-Mart and I'm not going to pay a membership to save a few bucks at Sams Club.

I'll stick with my Meijer (I used to work there, I'm partial... what can I say?) haha

I'm with you man! The people who crack me up are the ones who complain about Wal-Mart, but still shop there. I'm hoping we get a Meijers down here. They are the only ones who carry the polish sausage that we like.

I would highly recommend SW Fort Wayne. When I used to live in FW up until 2 years ago - I lived both NNW and SW and liked SW much better. I'm talking in very general terms here, but the SW people seemed like they were more likely to be transplants and a slightly better class of people than what I found on the NNW part of FW. That is just my opinion and I'm not trying to offend anyone
