Seeking Madison Info
Considering looking at Madison for retirement.
Live in New England now but housing costs (400k for 1100 sq ft) and long cold 6 mos winters make us want to spend retirement elsewhere.
We love history, architecture, a sense of community and nice real downtown. Looking for low crime and a place w/things going on.
We'd like to hear both the good and the bad about Madison.
One of us will still work so need to know what opportunities there are for work and in what fields.
Thanks.

I don't know much about job opportunities and such in Madison, but we love that place! I would move there in heartbeat if I could.

I too was planning on retiring in Madison, but was there in the beginning of Winter and it was still to cold for me. I live for now in Northern Indiana and it is way too cold for me here. Everything else about Madison I loved and I mean everything. Everyone is so friendly and the downtown area is beautiful.
However, I decided to retire in Oklahoma that is where I spent my first 25 years of my life. Better Winters and cost of living cheaper.

How are the Winters? My husband and I definitely want 4 seasons but a shorter Winter. We can get avg 50 inches but can get as much as 100 inches. Can also get very cold.
Also, how are the summers?

Moving to Madison
My family is moving to Madison. My husband is there already and the kids and I will be following in February. I grew up an hour upriver in southern Indiana. The weather is typical midwestern weather. Fall is beautiful and temperate, winter is cold and gray (worst months are Jan and Feb), spring is usually mild and summer is hot!
The smoke stacks are from the Clifty Creek power plant. That is where my husband is employed. The folks are friendly and always willing to help. We have been searching for a home and haven't found anything we really, really like - thinking about building. It really is a wonderful area.
