I know the location is fictional, but I've always kind of thought they live somewhere near Bedford. First, Mike works at a limestone quarry. The limestone quarries are located in Monroe and Lawrence counties. The town is too small to be in Monroe County.

The family took a trip to Brown County state park which was about an hour or so away in one episode. A couple of trips to Indianapolis were also about an hour or so away.

The thing that throws this "off" is the oldest son's state college is about 45 minutes away from home. He would never get into IU as a football player or student. I've kind of thought they had ISU in mind as the college even though it's in the western part of the state and not the eastern part of the state.

Look at Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco. There is not one big city in the country that doesn't have parts that are "rough around the edges".

First of all I enjoy the show.

The people just seem like slightly below average middle Americans. I think they were supposed to represent anyone, anywhere, who is not movie star good looking, does not have a perfectly decorated home, or a well padded bank account.

No, they are not the same class as "Modern Family". For me, they are less over the top than "Married with Children", and more of of comedy than a "dramedy" than "Roseanne".
I believe that both "Married..." and "Roseanne" took place in Illinois.

I'm not sure what the problem is - that the family is too "hick" or "red neck"...or that they are not enough?

It seems to be set in a "working class suburb". There are many of those.

There are people like this family in states as diverse as Pennsylvania, NY, NJ, Ohio and Florida. People for whom money is not taken for granted, yet who are not stupid and struggle a bit with the American dream.

Still, they send their son to college, although he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. and the youngest son is. But he's a bit unusual. When mom becomes fed up with auto sales, she goes back to school to be a dental assistant. The family goes to church, although they don't always get their on time.

At least these people try to get it right. I don't see them as "rough around the edges" at all. They are kind on "in the middle".

Struggling, like many Americans, but not slipping into despair.

The one thing that I don't understand in the 1970s decor and appliances. By the age of the children, the parents probably married in the late 80s, early 90s.
I'd expect to see a lot of pastels and overstuffed sectional sofas - not avocado greens and harvest gold.

Could they have meant VU?

It's not horrible. I think it is more of your standard family sitcom, which is not my cup of tea. However, I believe that Parks and Rec is far superior.

But you have no problem trolling a forum post specifically about it. That's good.

Am I not entitled to an opinion? Or do I need to check with you first?
