My husband may be getting transferred to Bunker Hill very soon. We may have to move up there (from SC) before our house here sells. We've heard Kokomo may be a good place to start out.
We have 2 kids, and although I currently work (as a teacher), I would very much like to stay at home, if possible. What sort of salary do y'all think would be necessary to live in a middle/working class neighborhood and maintain that lifestyle? We've heard the cost of living is lower in IN than here in SC.
We've been shocked at the prices of some of the houses we've seen on realtor.com in Kokomo and Peru. Are these places just filled with poor neighborhoods, or are houses that affordable? We've seen several 3br homes for 50,000 to 75,000. You just don't see that around here, unless the house is across the street from a factory or in the ghetto.
We really want a low-crime neighborhood, with easy access to parks, shopping, etc. Easy access for us would mean less than 30min to the mall.

I'd like to feel safe taking the kids for a walk by myself, too. An older neighborhood with sidewalks would be great! Our kids are preschool-aged, so the school district isn't currently a huge concern, although I am interested, since I very well may have to look for a job teaching this fall.
