If it's on the American Top 40, it's a safe bet I don't listen to it. In Indy, my favorite wtts fm. They have an online stream if you are in California. It's an independent radio station with a good mix of new up and coming singers along with the older. Ray Lamontagne, Norah Jones, Sting, Green Day, Modest Mouse, Umphrey's McGee, Coldplay, Eric Clapton, various 80's from time to time, etc.

I also love older country. Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, etc. but listen to other genres from time to time as well.

I'm more curious about the big picture here? Why California v Indiana? You couldn't get more divergent. California is a music hub ... recording studio and artist central .... not so much in Indiana.

I don't listen to any commercial radio whatsoever ... don't like listening to ads. I listen to our local community radio station (www.whum.org) that plays EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING without commercials. Other than that, I listen to my Ipod or Pandora.

Well I am doing an actual study between Indiana and California. I need some strong evidence of living differences in prefference. I believe from when i lived in california, that the difference of musical taste was much more broad and not so peer influenced. As indiana, I feel as I have seen, most people like what they "social groups" like to listen to, as apposed to being there own individual self.

Peer influence is related less to geography and more to age.

I grew up in California and moved to Indiana in the late 70s and always liked what I liked, and that encompasses a wide variety of music...rock, pop, classical (including opera), show tunes, hip hop, even a little old school country (very little) thrown in. And there are songs of each genre that I don't like, and don't ever recall saying I liked or disliked a song or genre because my friends felt the same way.

I kind of agree with you ryry ... I grew up in Indiana and I found that most people I grew up with listened to the same radio station, which was a cruddy top 40 station. The station that had a reputation of playing "scarier" music was nothing more than a classic rock station, but boy if you said you listened to it, it was like you were a total rebel. Now me ... I listened to the extremely local career center station and ND's station that played new wave (this was the early 80's) and when I talked about the music I listened to, all I got were glares because, at that time, nobody heard of Depeche Mode, INXS, Klaus Nomi, Ramones ... mind you, these music programs were only on at night too ... forget about telling my peers I listened to Dr. Demento on Sunday nights.

But I will agree with your hypothesis based solely on my experience as a hoosier child in a small town ... a really really really small town.

Keep in mind that there are probably similar stories in small town California as well. Large urban areas tend to not go with the flow as much as small towns.

I listen to pretty much all country. A wide variety of new and old. I like a lot of mainstream artist but a lot of other ones not yet discovered too.

I like some other stuff too though. Some old school rock such as AC/DC, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Lynyrd Skynrd and others like John Mellencamp, Jimmy Buffett, and Bob Marley. I listen to very little hip hop only in certain situations.

I don't listen to it but a lot of people are in to hard core rock heavy metal stuff around here.

Hard rock, heavy metal, and classic rock is HUGE in Fort Wayne/ Northern Indiana. When I say hard rock/metal I'm talking about radio rock. Crap like Slipknot, Godsmack, Nickelback, Kid Rock, Metallica, Korn, System Of A Down etc.... are all the rage in FW. In the smaller cities people listen to rap, country, hard rock, classic rock or pop. And, you will RARELY come across anyone in small towns that listen to something other than those 5 genres I just mentioned. Bloomington probobly has the biggest diversity of musical tastes. That city also has alot of indie fans and punk rockers. Indianapolis has a small pocket of indie fans (Mainly in the Broad Ripple area).

Personally... my favorite styles of music are post-punk, shoegaze, and indie.

I listen to stuff on the Top 40 lists or hip hop. It seems like in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis that is the most popular with younger people.
