If Indianapolis Didn't Exist?
I was just wondering, if Indianapolis did not exist, what would be the best City in Indiana?
I would go with Fort Wayne, just because it is the most developed, although I am biased since that is where I am from.

then the state capital would probably still be in Corydon ... and everything that Indy had would probably gravitate toward southern indiana.

If Indianapolis didn't exist.......
I -69 would have been built through Evansville where us 41 sits now; I-64 would have been routed through Evansville where the Lloyd sits now, and I-164 (renamed 264 as it would be a loop) would be a loop around E-ville and Hendo. The Colts would be the Evansville Colts, and Fort Wayne would be to Indiana what Evansville is now....... an afterthought. Indiana State would have been born in Evansville, not Terre Haute, and would be a strong MAC school.

I have to disagree with you. I think that northern Indiana would be more developed than Evansville. At least northern Indiana has Chicago nearby, Evansville has nothing, well only Louisville. Also, I-69 is in Fort Wayne and I believe that the toll road would also have gone from Fort Wayne.

Downtown Fort Wayne is roughly 44 miles or so south of the toll road. You would have to move Fort Wayne north in order for it to make sense to have the toll road go through Fort Wayne. Compare that with I-64 which is maybe 13 miles north of downtown Evansville; it wouldn't take much for that to have been routed where the Lloyd is now. Add to that I-69 routed through the heart of Evansville, and you have some of the factors in place that lead to the growth of Indianapolis.

No brainer.
It's Gary.
Gary would've never had the decline it had in the '60s, because multiple industries would have settled there, since it's right on Lake Michigan and the biggest city next to Chicago. Northwest Indiana is the perfect place to place things, based on vicinity alone. It used to be the second biggest city in Indiana next to Indianapolis.
