Evansville college student apartment search
I'm a college student looking for cheap, affordable housing in a good part of town. I have a roomate already lined up but we just need to find somewhere to go. All of the places I've seen I have no idea what they're really like. I don't really know Evansville that well and am a bit directionally challeged. hehe. I'm lost. I want a good place to start out where I won't get robbed or whatever else. No one has yet to tell me anything unbiased about places around here...
I want:
-2 bedrooms
-some utilities included (or all if its possible)
-nothing exceeding $525 a month
-Acceptable neighborhood
-shopping malls aren't important.. I just need a good starter apartment
Please help. Thanks

I used to rent a house near Broadway and Barker Ave for 450; 2 Bdrm and a roommate. Never had an issue with crime. I also rented in Kentucky for a while. Neither place was exceedingly nice, but they served their purpose for a broke college student.
What places are you currently looking?

Without going into too much detail, I can offer this:
Normandy Arms - right off Virginia Av by Eastland Mall and the Green River Road commercial area. As such, that area does attract all kinds; but in general is not a bad area. At Christmas time, it gets crazy over there. Virginia Ave is a two lane road handling 6 lanes of traffic volume during the Christmas season.
Orchardgate - I have heard mixed reviews about this place; but it is pretty popular among USI students if that tells you anything. It is a primarily residential area behind a commercial area. Lloyd and Red Bank hosts a Super Wal Mart and Pearl Drive has a movie theater and several restaurants and a Home Depot.
Vann Park - Vann and Pollack area is ok, though a lot of the apartmants in that area are frowned upon by many in Evansville. Nearby Covert and Vann area has seen better days.
Barret, Greenleaf, and the Elms - This is a nice area; the biggest drawback is commuting from Henderson to whichever college you are attending. To UE is no big deal, straight shot up 41. To USI, it is a little different (I also worked at Target on First Ave in Evansville). I commuted to USI from Hendo for a year, and I hated it. I certainly would not recommend it.

It would help to know which college you're attending, or at least the area U of E and IBC are east, USI is west, Ivy Tech and Grace Bible are north.
If it's U of E, there are a slew of apartments within walking distance, mostly east of the campus between the Lloyd Expressway and Lincoln Ave. Most are small buildings or houses split into apartments, not many complexes as such.
Hendo is nice, somewhat provincial (because so many locals grew up there), but not in a bad way. The two things to keep in mind are (1)the bridges... royal pain in the butt when they do repair or painting, which happens a lot, and (2) Henderson to or from Evansville is a long distance call. This isn't as important as it used to be if you have unlimited long distance or a cell with an Evansville number.
