Im trying to keep an open mind about living here and its probably more personal than anything Indiana has done to me. I just didnt start off on the right foot with realtors, government agencies and our kooky landlord we had in Mishawaka. He was a good ole boy that played dumb but he was dumb like a fox. So my first year was plagued with liars and scammers! I just find this area kind of hard to fit in. Detroit was more diverse. Here it seems certain social classes group together and its seems segregated. I dont fit in with people that dont take education seriously and then dont fit in with the PHD peeps cuss my degree is nothing compared to theirs. I know there has to be the "in betweens" people somewhere around here! But I will say one thing that I dont know if I will ever get used to, is the weather here. I have never experienced so much rain, gloomy days and horrific snow. I think Ive developed seasonal affective disorder I think I will feel better once I start working. I need to meet more people.

No, it's not just you. South Bend is a truly miserable place to live. I've only been here since May, after moving from a fairly nearby location (Three Rivers, MI), and I absolutely hate it here. I actually moved to Niles, Mich., to avoid living in Indiana, but it's all the same anyway, this area might as well be in the Hoosier State. Niles is just a sleepy suburb of South Bend, with the haves in the fancy subdivisions along Redfield Rd. just north of Granger, and the have nots everywhere else. At least it's much safer than SB itself.
When I moved here I kept an open mind, I tried to get into living here, find a decent job, get into Michiana culture, meet people in the area. It doesn't help. It sucks, plain and simple. The weather is horrible, and I'm from West Michigan which is known for lake-effect snow. It rains and is cloudy here CONSTANTLY, even when it's sunny in West Michigan. Most people here do NOT value education at all, and the ones who do are all Notre Dame students or profs. This place has no job opportunities for college grads, NONE. To get a job you have to either be a professional with advanced degrees and years of experience, or work for minimum wage at Wendy's or McDonald's. There are no companies based here - Kalamazoo, a city half the size of South Bend, has far more local companies and job opportunities. There is also much more to do in Kalamazoo, from the arts, sports, parks, outdoor activities, restaurants, and other such things. South Bend has nothing. It is also very un-diverse, even tiny Three Rivers has more diversity. There is heavy segregation here, and people seem to have no ambition whatsoever. It's horrible.
I'm moving to Alaska if this job I'm in the process of getting works out. I need to be out of this area as soon as possible. I know many people who who want to leave SB, but can't for whatever reason. Michiana is like a quicksand that sucks you in, and you don't realize you're trapped until it's too late.

Ok, calm down and stop being overdramatic. I mean, by your description of Michiana it seems like you are describing Hell. I live in the Michiana area (Goshen/Nappanee area) and I love it. Not to mention that I value education. While there isn't necessarily tons to do in South Bend or the surrounding areas, it is not like there is absolutely nothing! I think you need to take a chill pill. And about the weather, South Bend does get a lot of snow, but I am sure that it is not that much different than Three Rivers. By the way, you know that winters can change year by year, right?
I see that your looking at a job in Alaska, good luck with enjoying the weather up there. It gets just as cold if not colder, but with less snow. I for one would rather have snow if it is going to be cold. (just me).
About the jobs, there are plenty of worse places in the Midwest. You do realize we are in a recession, correct? Jobs aren't going to be opening up right in front of you. I do agree that there are not a lot of South Bend based jobs, but SB still has plenty of opportunities to find a good paying job. (Do you have a degree?)
Last but not least, I feel like you have a certain hatred for Indiana. What do you mean that Niles might as well be in the Hoosier state? What do you think of Hoosiers?
Anyways, how about you stop belittling the Michiana area. When you are typing your erroneous facts, one can tell when somebody is being overdramatic and literally out of control. The place you described Michiana is not that bad, and deep down you know it.
