if you could give us specifics on what your family enjoys doing, that would help. There are many family friendly communities in Indiana.

Thank you for your response. I'm just looking to gain insight on various areas, no particulars at this time. However, if an area of particular interest strikes us, I will inquire about the specifics at that time. It is good to know that Indiana is host to so many family friendly communities. If you could be specific in identifying these areas, it may be a good starting point for us. Thank you! God bless!

Here is a list of some places that I am familiar with:

For Northern Indiana, some that come to mind are:

Middlebury, IN
Wakarusa, IN

I would look into those, as these communities tend to be proactive amid the economic downturn. I went to school in Wakarusa and can say that if you live in the town, you will be asked to get involved with the community. Both of these communities are above the average income but are not suburbs. They are located outside of Elkhart and Goshen in Elkhart County. I am not sure if that was what you were looking for, but it is a starting point. In fact, just recently the community of Wakarusa just erected a playground for two women who served in their community. They relied on donations and community support to construct the playground. I am not sure if you were looking for bigger towns or not but that is what I could come up with?

Here is the story about the two women and the playground:

New playground brings Wakarusa community together

I wanted to show you that so you could get an idea of what this community is like, and these things happen all the time. Every holiday they decorate the town center and the middle of the intersection will have a big christmas tree or pumpkin, depending on the season. Also, the downtown is quaint and looks really good, well landscaped, etc.

Hope this helps!

The communities surrounding Indianapolis are also considered family friendly, especially with the proximity of the fabulous Children's Museum of Indianapolis and Zoo.

I am sure that living near Indy would be really fun for kids I think that Ft Wayne is a great area to raise a family as well. We have the award winning Childrens' Zoo and Science Central, a fun interactive museum. I believe the cost of housing is less here than in Indy, which would be a trade off for being near a big city. There is an focus on the Arts, with a childrens theater as well as several art museums.

There are several high achieving school districts here, including SW Allen, where I live. I really think its a great place to grow up, and I enjoy being in a mid sized city. Good luck where ever you land!

In the central part of the state, West Lafayette school district is very highly rated, as are schools in Noblesville and Carmel. If you're looking in the far northwestern part of the state, Crown Point, Valparaiso and Lowell have excellent schools as well. Batesville, in the southeast is good and I agree with the comments about Middlebury (also highly ranked and very family friendly community, albeit smaller that the others).
