Default Deaf Services Bloomington Indiana

Hello,

I may be getting a job in the Bloomington area and as I have a son who is deaf and in the 3rd grade i was wondering if anyone has any information on what the local school district offers. I am aware that the state school is in Indianapolis but that is to far away.

Any insite would be helpful

You may get some answers here Home (MCCSC Hearing Services), or at least some contact information.

If your child has an IEP, even if from another state, my understanding is that his new school district must follow the same IEP until it's time for review. One of my family members had an IEP from another state as a toddler. MCCSC had to follow that plan for his initial services. I don't believe it was reviewed until the end of the school year as the other IEP's were reviewed.

Thanks for the replies. I have checked that website and the services area is still under construction. As far as the IEP is concerned he does have one and i understand what the district should do for him. My concern is that they may be lacking in translators and aids as was the case here in florida.

I know the deaf school is in Indianapolis and I had hoped that bloomington had a regional center or an outreach facility.

if anyone has any more information please let me know.

This might be a good place to start. Go to the link:

Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences (http://www.indiana.edu/~sphs/clin-hearing.html - broken link)

at the bottom right is another page about a Hearing Support Group. Perhaps the person in charge of that group may have some advice/info for you.

Here is another resource:

Home Page

I do know that MCCSC specifically hired an aid for a child that was visually impaired. This history indicates to me that if they don't have the person yet, they will hire someone for your child.

I'm happy you know what should happen with the IEP. My sibling is always amazed at what other parents don't know about IEPs.

I'm and educational interpreter in Indianapolis, and YES, federal law requires deaf and hard of hearing students with an IEP, to have interpreters in the classroom with your son or daughter.
