Default Hi!

Hello.

Just trying to get something clear.
If Salem is such a bad place and has so much crime why does it rate so highly in the City Data list of 101 cities with the LEAST crime?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Hello there
I was considering a move to Salem. After doing research I found out that meth and marijuana are all the place. They usually get some mean storms (tornadoes, thunderstorms, etc.) in the summer, it's about a half hour drive to Louisville, and they have had some flooding problems.

Happy Cells:
I think it's one of those things that for the most part is a matter of perspective.
If you've never lived in a truly high crime area, it would seem like the crime was terrible there. You know what I mean?

I've never personally had an issue with crime there except when my bike got stolen when I was a kid. Otherwise my parents and other family rarely lock their doors unless they will be gone for several days. So again, matter of perspective and experiences I guess.

Though I must say that over the years I think it has gradually gotten "worse" there, or it may be that it's more public. The main thinks you hear about are:
Theft
Meth and other drugs
Alcohol related crimes (drunk driving)
Domestic violence & child abuse

Hope this helped!
SB

Default salem and jobs

The jobs in Salem are nearly all low paying, service related in nature because the few 'powers that be' want it that way. I and a friend were working on an idea for a business that had the possibilities of being a
real money making manufacturing thing. That is until we attended the first
meeting of the 'Home Town Competitiveness' program that was held back
at the first of this year.We learned right there and then that the people who were there only had themselves in mind, and them only. They want Salem to stay small. Have only family-owned small service related business
kind of things here. It was made VERY clear that now that several factories were gone , it was going to stay that way. NO FACTORIES. The local newspaper (i use the term loosely) has been used as the mouthpiece
for this stuff. The sad thing is that most of the people here just do not know or care that this is going on. As for our idea. Not in Salem. One more thing. The local 'justice' system is just as messed up too. The good-ole boy system is king.-but ain't that america?

What can you tell me about Mitchell and Bedford? These are areas we might be interested in moving to.

That's funny, I'm from Salem and I live in California!

Hate to break it to people, but drugs like meth is EVERYWHERE. Every place I've been to has had it. Don't run with that crowd and you don't have to worry about it. I had plenty of friends and I was bit of an odd-ball by small city standards. Yes, some people are narrow-minded, but that is everywhere, even in California.

I personally love Salem. There are health care jobs, and of course, a lot of people commute to New Albany or Louisville. Don't get me wrong, I love California, but I'm a bit of a hippy... so there you go. :P

We are also looking to relocate to a small town in Indiana or Kentucky. Salem has a house that is very affordable and what we want. My husband will be retiring and we are raising 3 grandchildren. I was born and raised in Henderson Kentucky. We don't want to live right there due to the grandkids fathers are there and not a good influence at all and they are not in the kids lives and won't be. My husband is Native American and One of my grandchildren is half black. We are low key people that just want to live in the ? Country and have a garden a healthy place to raise the kids. Would the town accept that?
We aren't trouble makers at all.
