Domergurl,

What would be a nice place in Louisville that would provide recreation after a days work?

Will I be taxed twice if I stay in KY and Work in IN? Thanks for the help.

thanks for the help. I found Madison to be a bit far off from both places. So I think I will take that out of consideration.
I havent found a place in Clarksville with good reviews from people. What community would you recommend?

You will get dinged for both Indiana and Kentucky taxes but you'll be able to claim a credit when you do your taxes. I would recommend that you consult a tax professional to get exact figures.

Rents are around $500-750/month for a 2 bedroom place in Clarksville or Sellersburg. Rents in Louisville can vary widely depending on the area of the city you choose to live. I'd recommend asking over on the Kentucky forum for recommendations/costs.

Your route from Louisville/Clarksville/Sellersburg to Scottsburg will be on I-65 which is usually cleared very well and in a timely manner since it is a major north-south artery in the state. Just adjust your speed and allow for extra travel time when the weather is bad and you'll be fine.

As far as apartment reviews are concerned, keep in mind that the people who make the effort to review are often going to be negative. Our son lived for a year in an apartment complex in a major metro area that only had a 41% satisfaction rating on apartmentratings.com and he loved it. He had a spacious, quiet, 2 bedroom apartment in a nice complex with a pool, etc. People tend to get p.o.'d if a repairman isn't at the door 5 minutes after they call for something minor...human nature. I would recommend visiting the complexes and chatting with some of the residents. You're liable to get a more balanced feedback than reading online reviews that way. Also, ask some of your co-workers. I'm sure that some of them commute and can give you some good insight into areas to live/areas to avoid.

I don't know, I guess it boils down to what you are expecting. If you want small town, rural, nothing much to do on the weekends unless you travel, but your commute to work is minimal ... then you could look into the small communities around Scottsberg. If the taxes are an issue, then I'd suggest you find a place in New Albany or Floyds Knobs ... places directly across from louisville. That way, you can still have the advantages of louisville without the extra taxes.

I agree. Madison, although lovely, is too far of a drive and not much to do there for a single male on a daily basis. It's a great day or weekend trip, but I see it more of a tourist place and retirement area. As someone who stayed with a friend in Scottsburg while looking for a job in Louisville, I would just live in Louisville. The drive is only going to be 30 min at most, and you're going against traffic on the bridge, so no worries there. I used to drive from Scottsburg to Univ of Louisville and it didn't take me long, even with bridge traffic.

Grandma, Cobolt

thanks for the reply. I agree some people might post only negative comments. But I really dont have lot of resources to rely on. I dont want to end up with my stuff at a place whose realty Id come to know after a week and not find it to my liking. I know Im being a bit picky here but I dont want to waste my resources and get stuck. I dont know anyone at my new work place, but did manage to get hold of someone. The person told me to stay in Scottsburg, but the problem is there were only 2 bedroom townhomes available there and that too for $650pm.
I find it way over my budget for a single guy. Roommates might be an option, but at such a remote area it might be difficult.

Doing the math for fuel cost per month for a 5day work week would cost $140-150 for a 30 min drive..

Is your company giving you any grace period to find a place to live, or do they expect you to rent, sight unseen? I guess we were lucky in that we were always allowed to stay in a hotel or corporate housing up to a month while house/apartment hunting.

I wish I could give you some assurances, but I have no first hand knowledge of the apartment complexes in that area. I did find a few other rental options in the Scottsburg newspaper classifieds here. This Weeks Listings
