I will soon start work in Scottsburg, IN. Im moving in from LA and would like to stay close to a city. I was preferring a place closer to Louisville, KY.

-Im a single male so prefer a 1 or 2bhk at a max.
-Don't want to travel more than 30-35 min to work
-
What is the best option for me: Clarksville, Jeffersonville, Louisville or Scottsburg? ( thought of these as they run along the same freeway)

Are there other better places to live in apart from ones I have mentioned?

Is this area safe for people of foreign origin?

For me best= Safe+ Good housing+ friendly+ accessible daily living stuff within 2 miles (fitness center, malls, pharmacy, food joints, grocery, auto repair and movies)

I plan to move in within 2-3 weeks. All the help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Travel,

Not to run anyone off from Indiana, but based on what you say, I can't recommend anywhere except Louisville proper. I would suggest areas like Bardstown Road in the Highlands and Frankfort Ave into St. Matthews.

Although the Indiana towns are part of Louisville metro, there really seems to be a big difference when you cross the bridge. Most of the people I know from New Albany, Jeffersonville, etc grew up there. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't see that appealing to a single male looking for diversity and city life. I don't even think there is a Starbucks on that side of the river.

Honestly, if you are going to Clarksville, New Albany, etc, you might as well stay in Scottsburg and avoid the commute. While Louisville isn't LA, I think you will find it much more to your liking.

I hear Madison, IN is one of the nicest small towns to live in Indiana. You might want to check it out. Not sure if it is what you are interested in. ?? I hear the places of Clarksville, Jeffersonville, and New Albany are nice but they don't really act as a typical suburb. They are established cities but are genuinely nice. At least, you are closer to a mid-sized city this way.

If you are looking for a suburban location with retail and what not; you might look at Clarksville, IN

I agree with javahoe. Louisville would be less of a culture shock than any of the small towns between Louisville and Scottsburg. Clarksville (pop. around 21000) and Sellersburg (pop. around 6000) would be alright for a place to hang your hat and within a short distance to Louisville for bigger city amenities.

Madison is pretty and all, but I wouldn't suggest it for the OP. He/she wants to stay close to the city and Madison is at least an hour drive from downtown Louisville, and still probably 30 minutes or more from Scottsburg. Your best option really depends on how important each of the requirements you listed are to you.

If you truly want to be 2-3 miles from all the things you mentioned, I would recommend staying closer to Louisville. If you do this, however, you are most likely going to have to stay on the Indiana side or right near downtown to keep your commute around 30-35 minutes. Traveling from Clarksville near the river would probably take you right around this amount of time, but the plus is that there are restaurants nearby along the river and you will pass by the Greentree mall every day on your way to work up I-65. You'll also be pretty close in this area to Louisville in case your looking for more urban types of activities.

As for neighborhoods, Clarksville and Jeffersonville are okay, but in my opinion can be hit or miss in places. From this aspect, I much rather prefer either Scottsburg or some of the neighborhoods in eastern or southeastern Louisville. I also never found a lot of apartments on the Indiana side that seemed to be really nice, although I wasn't quite clear whether you were looking for an apartment or home. I think you should be able to find perfectly safe areas within any of these options though.

Also as others have said, these towns on the Indiana side aren't really your typical suburbs. The were established as towns either at the same time or before Louisville so they really feel more like extensions of the city or their own small town rather than planned suburbs.

Good luck to you.

I would suggest you rent in Louisville and get acquainted with the area.

Scott County Indiana - Stay Here Go Everywhere! Here's a website about Scott County/Scottsburg I found it informative...

Dinner Theater - Derby Dinner Playhouse is close by

If you like Casino's, there is:
HORSESHOE CASINO & HOTEL SOUTHERN INDIANA...
40 Miles South of Scottsburg - Phone: 866.676.SHOE; Fax: 812.969.6780

BELTERRA CASINO, RESORT, & SPA...
45 Miles east of Scottsburg - Phone: 888.235.8377

FRENCH LICK RESORT - CASINO...
35 Miles west of Scottsburg - Phone: 888.694.4332

You also have things close by like: Cave Country Canoes on Blue River,
Marengo Cave - Individuals
http://www.paolipeaks.com/

There is places (State Parks) with bike trails, horse trails, walking trails etc... That would all be pretty accessible to the area of Scottsburg.

Have you thought of finding a place in Scottsburg? Since you will be working there and I am not sure what kind of hours you would be working you could always venture out on weekends to places like Louisville. Just saying I honestly wouldn't want to drive accross the bridge every day, back and forth with rush hour traffic on the bridge from what I have read can be a real headache unless you have too, but again that's just me.

Just saying don't limit yourself just on Louisville, when there are plenty to do and see in Southern Indiana. Single, no kids....my friend you have the world in the palm of your hands Where ever you decide, I wish you the best of luck and welcome!

Missing Indiana,

Thanks for the help. I was trying to find apartments/ townhomes online in Scottsburg but couldnt find any available at the major websites like rent.com. I went through the reviews people made about Clarksville, Jeffersonville and New Albany. A lot of people complained of poor management and safety issues of people breaking into your car.

I dont know how much of it is true or just poor competition gimicks. But its not helping me out in my decision. Do you know any good communities that should be up there on my list? Thanks again.

ChickeyDuck,

Thank you for all the information about Clarksville.

I like your idea of avoiding the traffic. Even though I have gotten used to LA traffic but I guess a break would be welcomed.

Unfortunately I am not able to find any apt/ townhome available in Scottsburg online. How can I get an idea about the rent and type of building structure over there? Thanks again
