Elkhart/South Bend area (Mishawaka, Osceola: attorney, house, bankruptcy)

If anyone's interested in the Elkhart/South Bend/Mishawaka area, we lived there for two years coming from MN. It was okay. Our house was actually in a really little town called Osceola which is between Elkhart and South Bend, but my husband's job was in Elkhart and we did everything else in South Bend. I like the way they have all the major stores, malls, restaurants there. You waste very little gas because it's all in one area called Grape Road. The schools were okay. My kids went to the Penn school district (I believe it was called) on the outskirts of Mishawaka. I really liked downtown Mishawaka. My husband loved the fishing. He caught steelheads and some kind of salmon(?) I'm not too familiar with fish myself. The cost of living compared to other places we lived is pretty low. There were some friendly people, some not. The only negatives I can think of is the quality of the food in most of the grocery stores wasn't that great compared to other places we've lived; if you live out in the country or outlying subdivisions (which we did), people burn leaves a lot which we did not care for at all, and I don't know if this is true or not, but we were told that Osceola was a big KKK area, and every year, the KKK holds their big rally on some farm in Osceola. I did see in the newspaper once about the district attorney in South Bend was trying to stop a KKK rally from happening. My kids did hear some of the kids in their schools make comments that sounded like the KKK might say. I personally never witnessed anything, but I'm not saying that it wasn't going on. Other than that, it wasn't too bad of a place to live. We left because the company my husband worked for was heading for bankruptcy, so he got out before he could've potentially lost his job. After he left, the company did file for bankruptcy twice, so it probably was a good idea we left for that reason. I might consider living there again if the opportunity arose.

I liked the area alot. I lived in Laporte, not far from South bend. I moved because of the Bethlehem steel closed down about 5 years ago during the big japan take over. A lot of jobs were lost in Indiana because of that, including mine. I'll never go bake because of all the stuff i seen during this time with friends, family, and neighbors. This is also why the cost of living is getting cheaper as time goes on.

As for fishing it is one of the best areas in the country to fish. There is almost every kind of freshwater fish in Indiana. I truly mis that.

The KKK, forget about them. They are every where in Indiana, but most will never see them. This is the good thing about them, out of sight out of mind.
