I am moving to Indiana from WI and looking for the best area anywhere up to 30 minutes from Goshen. I have an 8 and an 11 year old and looking for the best school situation for them. Neither one is overly involved in sports. Any help would be appreciated. Is Granger a nice area?

Can't help too much, as we are ~45 minutes from Goshen, near Albion. But, FWIW, the schools here though are excellent. Oldest child is in 8th grade, and has all A's - have found the system here to be very helpful, professional, caring, and in-depth.

As to Granger, have only been through there a couple times. Sorry can't help much there. But, if have any other info on that or any other area around here will let ya know.

Try Baugo Twp schools (Jimtown), Plymouth (maybe further than 30 minutes though). When I grew up in the area, Concord schools (dunlap), were pretty good.

Granger has very good schools, but the system is humongous. You could try Middlebury schools too.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. What does Hoosier mean and where did the term come from?

Interesting,,, just did a search for Hoosier w/in this forum, and nothing really popped out, at least as its own thread. In any case, a bit of background first Coming from the St Louis, MO area, the term 'hoosier' is just about in the same category as redneck, trailer trash, idiot, etc. One version of why this is so places us back many many years ago, when some people from Indiana broke through a picket line during a strike in the St Louis area, and then of course the strikers called them this derogatory term as such. And this is stuck in our vernacular, at least for those that hail from this area. When I first moved to this area, was lol listening to the native Indiana lady that was a contestant for the Miss America pageant on the radio who proudly claimed that she was a 'hoosier', errr... sorry, I mean Hoosier.

Now, as to the term Hoosier itself, you will most likely not be shocked to know that there is not one clear, concise, unarguable, definite origin. Many have argued via their varied different camps, claiming it to be the moniker of a boss man during the construction of a rail line or he was the owner of a mill, others say it is simply shorthand for 'who is your' daddy type query, and others argue that it is derived from French 'osier' that gave the English Hoosier - a person living in the rural areas. There are other versions - these are the ones that I recall at the moment. Pulled the following from my bookmarks - have comfortable chair and reading light and some snacks before beginning...
The Word Hoosier
