Hello,

Can anyone tell me the good, bad, & ugly about Deam Lake Recreation area? I'm considering it as a possible site for a family picnic/reunion.

Thanks!

I haven't spent a ton of time there, but it's a pretty setting and I've never heard a lot of problems about the area. It is the starting point of the Knobstone hiking trail which winds roughly NW for 50-60 miles through the hills and ends up north of Salem. It's the longest and most challenging hiking trail in the state and is going to be expanded. There are also other things that go on from time to time like the Polar Bear Plunge that is happening next week to raise money for the Special Olympics.

Here is the Indiana DNR website with more info on what is in the Deam Lake Recreation area and maps as well: DNR: Deam Lake State Recreation Area

Sure, My only child, My son died there in 2006. His name was Mathew Ian Cowart. The nice folks at Deam Lake didn't think it was necessary to provide him and his friend lifejackets for their rowboat on July 5th, 2006. Oh He could have RENTED life jackets for a fee but since he was out of money, He drowned. Although swimming is not allowed outside of the approved areas at the beach this does not excuse the staff at Deam Lake for their blatanat disregard for human life and I hope their collective conscience is clear !!! Have a nice trip.

The lake is very nice, anything is what you make of it.......... Tragedies happen no matter where your at in time. Its very sad that something like that happend there. Im sure everyone that reads this thread are very sympathic for this and wishes the best for mr. Cowart and his family. I think the lake has many possibilities for all things to be one of the best times for all families to enjoy no matter how big or small........!!

People are responsible for the safety of their own children if they are under 18 it is YOUR responsibility to make sure YOUR children have all the safety gear they need. It is a terrible tragedy to loose a child especially when the death could have been prevented. It is a beautiful lake and we take our 5 kids there often

I am sorry for your sons tragedy but the news papers stated that he was 26 years old and jumped in the water. I feel very bad for you but this doesn't reflect the wonderful lake.
