We currently live in Chicagoland and are looking for some other places to explore to raise a family. We're from downstate IL, and while downstate is by no means gorgeous throughout, I believe it offers much more in the way of open space, some hilliness, and other areas of natural beauty. Ideally, we'd like to live in a location in or near a city (doesn't have to be a huge city) but we'd like for there to be some nice scenery to stir the soul a little bit-- and better yet, some nice places to walk or hike on the weekends. I understand that the Midwest is not a hot-bed of national parks, but I do think some areas might offer more in the way of pretty green areas, lakes (or reachable lakes), forests, etc. than other parts, like Chicagoland, where it's rather flat and many folks tend to go out of state when they're looking for a pretty, nature-oriented getaway. I'm aware of the natural beauty in Wisconsin and Minnesota -- but I'm curious what sorts there may be in Indiana and particularly that which may be fairly accessible from a place like Carmel. Any input is welcome! Thank you!

Brown County State Park is about an hour south of downtown Indy. Hiking, horseback riding and some of the best mountain biking in the country.
If you want a more "back country" exeperience the Hoosier National Forest and Yellowwood State Forest also offer plenty of options.

downstate Illinois is a lot like southern Indiana ... due to the glaciers receeding just south of Indianapolis. The terrain around Carmel is flat with fake lakes (reservoirs). Honestly, Carmel and Fishers is like naperville.
Recreational oppotunities ... well, you can put a boat on Geist or Morse reservoirs. There's a good trail that starts in Carmel called the Monon ... an old rail line that was converted to a biking/jogging trail. There are some nice nature centers ... Cool Creek just north of Carmel is nice. but if you want some good trails, fishing and spectacular fall colors .. Brown County and Hoosier national forest is the place to be.

The terrain around Carmel is very similar to the Chicago area--flat. One doesn't start to see hills in Indiana until south of Martinsville or so. The closest large lake is Geist Reservoir or perhaps Eagle Creek.
Here is info about Eagle Creek.

If you wanted to stay closer to Chicago, have you thought about Valparaiso? It would be more affordable than Chicago and probably a better place to raise a family in some ways. It's very close to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore which is a very pretty area and offers lots of opportunities for hiking or just going to the beach.
Around Carmel/northern Indy, it's pretty much flat open farm land and a couple man-made reservoirs as others have mentioned. You can go out on these reservoirs or you can also kayak/canoe in places on the White River, but I'm not as familiar with the put in locations for this area. I second the Monon trail as a nice place to go for a walk/bike ride. It would be a nice way to head down to Broad Ripple for lunch or to go in a couple stores on a weekend. You could also easily find a way to hop from here over to the canal and ride on to the Indianapolis Museum of Art or all the way down the White River Greenway to downtown. Eagle Creek Park on the NW side of Indy is the 4th largest City Park in the country and is only 20 minutes or so from Carmel (
Eagle Creek Park Foundation ). It has some pretty outdoors scenery as far as central Indiana is concerned and there's lots you can do there. Holiday Park near 62nd and Meridian is also another park that is very nice. It's a little farther in the city but it's about 100 acres or so and you can find spots that feel secluded. It has a nature center. Here's a website for that:
About Holliday Park, Indianapolis, Indiana . The grounds of the IMA are nice as well to get outside. You can stroll the grounds and gardens of the old Eli Lilly mansion or go in the museum for free and they are opening up a new 100 acre art and nature park that is all wooded and sandwiched between the canal and White River, adjacent to the museum. Info about the nature stuff is on their website (
Home | Indianapolis Museum of Art ). Downtown, while not as 'natural' as some of these areas is also a great place to get out and walk around. There are a lot of beautiful monuments to be seen and the canal is a great place to walk/ride a bike/rent a paddle boat.
Most of the hilly, more naturally scenic regions are at least 1.5 hours from Carmel in the southern part of the state. Brown County, just east of Bloomington, is by far the most well known (
DNR: Brown County ). It's the largest state park in Indiana by acres, but probably has the least amount of hiking trails. I also enjoy McCormick's Creek which is NW of Bloomington and also about 1.5 hours from Carmel.
McCormick's Creek State Park, Indiana or
DNR: McCormick's Creek
There are also lots of great caves that are set up as attractions for the public if you go farther south and plenty of other things to do and see. Marengo Cave (
Marengo Cave - Individuals )

Just for grins I tallied the hiking and biking trails in BCSP from the latest edition of the park map and came up with over 38 miles. I subtracted the Strahl Lake trail (Trail #6) because it doesn't really connect to the rest of the system. Still wound up with a nice 36.85 mile day hike!
Overall, I find the State Park system in IN to be very impressive. Other favorites are Clifty Falls, Turkey Run/Shades (excellent hiking), Versailles, and O'Bannon (although those are all a bit of a drive from Indy, more of a weekend get-away). I consider the yearly Park Pass to be a very very good deal.
Eagle Creek is probably my favorite "city" park. It's also the only place (that I am aware of) that one can rent XC skis in Indy.

I stand corrected. That number is a little higher than I had thought. Only 18 miles of those trails are designated for hiking in BCSP though, and some of those are disconnected from the bulk. I would be interested in walking the biking trails though. That might be interesting. Sorry to deviate a bit from the main post, but have you been on the biking trails before? Just curious what they're like to hike and if hikers would be in the way of people actually trying to bike. Wouldn't want to leave with tire treads on my back
Also, I agree that Clifty Falls and Turkey Run are great. I would also add Spring Mill as one of my favorites, but as you said these are a little farther from Indy. There are a lot more beautiful and scenic areas in Indiana than a lot of people give it credit for though.

To be a little more specific for the OP about the Indy area, Fort Harrison State Park is also not too far from Carmel and has around 10 miles of trails for hiking/biking. They also have horse rides, fishing, and apparently a little sledding hill in the winter.

Hope this has been helpful to you Doglover. Also, I'm just taking a guess about this one, but you might be interested in this

Not only do I hike them (and run them and ride them and ski them...) I helped build 'em!
They are multi-use, so yes hikers are welcome. I will warn you that ~some~ mountain bikers (usually the new riders) don't know the rules-of-the-trail, but 90% of the users are very polite and well behaved. If you want a more peaceful experience avoid weekend mornings (things usally clear out in the afternoon and on weekdays you can have the whole trail system to yourself).
If you pick up and/or download the newest trail map that includes hiking and biking you'll see that they now do indeed "hook up". Even Trail 9 (Taylor Ridge) now connects at Ogle Lake. I'm just waiting for the snow to melt and the trails to dry so I can plan a very-long trail run.
(p.s. sorry if we went off-topic a bit OP
