I just graduated from college in Indiana and I am taking a job in Indianapolis. However, I am from Illinois. My car is actually registered in my dad's name, thus the car is registered and insured in Illinois. Do I need to keep my IL driver's license? Do I need to get an Indiana one? Can the car be registered in IL if I have an IN license?

You can get an Indiana driver's license without registering your car in Indiana. I think the state law is that you have to get your car registered in Indiana within either 30 or 60 days of moving, but in your situation, it technically isn't *your* car.

Is your dad still paying for your Illinois plates and insurance? If so, I'd ride that wave as long as you can.

Otherwise, compare how much you pay to renew your registration in Illinois to how much it would cost to transfer the title and register the car in Indiana, and go with the cheaper one. I think you're acting within the law either way. As far as insurance, I think technically you're supposed to insure the car where it is garaged, but again, if your dad owns the car on paper, he can insure it. You are almost certainly getting a big discount if you are on your parents' policy.

If you decide to transfer your title and insurance, I can recommend my insurance agent. He actually has insurance licenses in Illinois and Indiana, so he can probably give you some advice. His name is Steve: http://www.priorityrisk.com/

You might get picked on a little by state troopers since you're driving an out-of-state car, though, so drive accordingly.

Oh, and congrats on the job and welcome to Indy!
