LOL please tell me that's not a serious suggestion.

It would be a good compromise geographically, I'll give you that. I think the benefits of Martinsville pretty much end there...

I thought it might be, but you're right, they don't come across well.

Thanks for all the help so far. I am learning via this board, and via other websites, that if I want to see my girlfriend, our best option would probably be to live together, since my lack of a car will keep me pretty much grounded in Indiana. And IndyGo does not seem like a viable option for getting around the city.

I wish I could do the commute. I would commute two hours each way via bus, if that were even an option. But considering the cost of the shuttle service, I don't think I'll be the one commuting.

I will talk to her about it... see where it goes from there.

So... really... without a car, is my life gonna suck in Indiana?

the short answer is yes.

Living in Bloomington, there's public transit options, but without wheels, you'll be isolated from Indy.

Live in Bloomington, Martinsville is "no-go." It's a white trash dump...

Yes. However, I think in most areas of the country, outside maybe the largest of cities (and the few smaller cities with great public transit), life w/o a car would suck.

If your gf didn't want to drive to Indy from Bloomington, you both could live separately and you could find a ride to Indy from time to time by using the internet/message boards/posting on campus bulletin boards/the Bloomington Shuttle Service/etc.. Then again, if you both live together, you would be saving $500/month in rent, which is more than enough for a second car.

Default Ride options

It is about an hour drive from the southside of Indianapolis. Add 15 min. for downtown and another 15 for the North, East or West sides.

If you are connected with the university there is an online Zimride ride-share service, but you have to have a university ID to get into it. Parking Operations - Indiana University, Bloomington You can also do a Zipcar for occasional trips. (on the same page) Finally, I think for faculty there is some kind of a shuttle from Bloomington to the other IU campuses, so you could get a ride to IUPUI at least and someone can pick you up from there.

If not, there is this: Indiana Carpool / Rideshare: 101 car pool / ride share listings

Good luck. I live in Indy, my son goes to IU, and it is a royal pain to have to go down there and get him if he can't find a ride, plus take him back later.

Can your girlfriend live in Bloomington with you, and do the commuting?

Bloomington is a great town to live in.
