The property tax situation + real estate market has created a tremendous wave of negativity right now. People went from generally positive to totally negative the first week of July when they saw their ridiculous property tax bills. It's like people woke up and said "Wow, we got some problems here!".

The steps toward a solution could come with the November elections, and then with the Indiana General Assembly in Jan 08. The problems are fixable. If we keep the heat on the elected officials, things will have to change. I have never seen more voter outrage. If the right moves are made, Indianapolis can still be a great place to live. IMHO, better days are ahead.

The Job Market? I am a computer programmer, and have a lot of opportunities. That is all I would care to comment on job-wise.

In terms of employment, you are very fortunate. I wish I could say the same, unfortunately I can't which is why I intend to get out of here during the Fall. Indy is nice, but I have just about had it.It is no fun being ignored, passed over and treated like a sack of trash by a bunch of fools in supervisory positions. I hope better days are ahead for Hoosierland, but it is unlikely that I will be here when those better days arrive.

On September 4, it will be five years since I moved here from the Baltimore metro area. I had absolutely no idea how it would turn out as I could not very well predict the future (Who can?). Yeah, if I had not moved here, I never would have known how it would have turned out. And for me, life in this town over the last 3 years has been mostly lousy. I took a risk, a gamble and failed. We both failed, but I am confident that I will prevail, along with you nice folks. In my case, I will more than likely get out of Indy during the early fall. My very best to the both of you. Take care.
Yes, 5 years ago last month. That's how we feel too, although at times we are more bitter. But it was our choice, an experience to chalk up. Best of luck to you as well!

Good luck to you Rikrich, I hope you find what you are looking for. If they don't get this property tax situation straight, I may be joining you in your exodus.

I think idiocy is a prerequisite for management positions in Indy. The stories I could tell you... Ultimately, I want to work for myself.

It is very hard to answer such a general question. Are you talking minimum wage, middle income, managerial, VP level, construction, IT, retail, etc.

Lilly hasn't done a general hire for a long long time. They have let a lot of their contract employees go.
I think Lilly is doing a lot of their hiring though Kelly Services now. That seems to be what I am gathering from the ads Kelly posts for them.

Just as a general aside, I have to agree that whenever someone posts that the job market *anywhere* is crap or totally OMG AWESOME1!!!!!!11!, you really have to do your own research. It may be true for them and for their line of work, but may not be true for you and yours. You really have to spend time studying job ads and labor statistics for your target area for your line(s) of work before making a decision. Can't base it all on some bitter or overly positive set of people on the internet whose line of work or situation may have nothing to do with yours.

In addition, you should look at the overall economic situation of an area to judge if it would be a good move or not. Is the town or city growing, developing, reinventing itself? How is it trying to attract new business or research? Is it working? How ready is the city or town to adapt to new technologies and economic situations? How is the infrastructure? How are the schools/universities? What is the COL? What is the unemployment rate and why? How diverse is the economy? Who are the major employers? How are they doing and how are they working to stay competitive? Are the emerging segments of the economy (biotech and alternative enegry based, for example)?

Good sources for that information come from just reading the local rags, business mags, economic journals, and bls.gov.

And then you have to look at yourself. How ready are you to adapt to change as a worker?

Right now the economic area question is about to break the deal for me between two places. I have a choice right now between a place that has lower unemployment, but depressed wages and no real economic investment and a place with higher unemployment, but higher wages and more economic investment. Hmm hmm. Will have a decision made next month. I thought I had it made before, but hmm hmm.

I am not leaving Indy because of the job market though. Rather for the geography. Comprimises, comprimises.
