How's the job market and how are the wages in Indianapolis? (South Bend: sales, house)

Hi. My wife and I are thinking about moving back to the midwest. We've visted the Indianapolis area and we'd like to move there. We're concerned about the job market and wages though. Can anyone give me some ideas of how things are going in the Indianapolis area? Are jobs plentiful or scarce? Are the wages high or low? Thanks!

Things seem to be on the upswing in central an southern indiana. With Honda coming into Greensburg and Getrag is building a huge transmission plant in Tipton (north of Indy). Veolia water just announced yesterday that they are moving their NA operations HQ to Indianapolis ...

But a lot depends on what you are looking for job wise. There is a lot of competition and few opportunities in certain wage bands and jobs. IT is an example.

It is very hard to answer such a general question. Are you talking minimum wage, middle income, managerial, VP level, construction, IT, retail, etc.

Lilly hasn't done a general hire for a long long time. They have let a lot of their contract employees go.

Well my wife is a dental assitant with lots of experience and I'll be looking for production work in either the printing or picture framing industies. We both have lots of sales experience to fall back on if necessary. We are from Northern Michigan originally, but we're living in Arizona right now and we want to move back to the midwest. We feel that the Indianapolis area might be a better place for us. I'm just concerned about the job market and wages. If the Indiana is anything like Michigan we might be better off staying where we are at.

We are planning on relocating to Indiana in about a month or two, from MI. My DP's job is in the medical field so not much to worry about for jobs or wages really.The main reason we are moving is beacuse he got a great job offer with a great pay raise, doing the same thing he does here in MI. MI's job market really stinks, so I would not recommened comming back here. What draws you to the Indy area? We are going to The South Bend area to be close to Lake MI. I can be to far from one of the Great Lakes!

Agreed. Based on my experience the job market in Indy is LOUSY. I moved here to build a better life from myself nearly 5 years ago, and my plans did not come to fruition despite my efforts and hard work. I have gotten to the point where I am fed up with being passed over and jerked around so I may very well be leaving Indy and the state of Indiana in the fall. Indy is a very nice place but it hasn't been very nice to me, especially over the last couple of years. I apologize for my bitter ramblings. To those of you you who are considering a move to the circle city, may you find the prosperity that has eluded me.

I can empathize. Depending on what you are looking for in life and how you define success, Indy can be a horrible, frustrating place. The only reason I'm still here is because my mom and grandmother need me right now, but I am plotting my escape.

I have to agree. We relocated here from Texas five years ago due to a job transfer. That job was "downsized" a year later and we've struggled to find employment ever since. We finally scraped together the last of our savings to start our own business that we can operate from anyywhere. We are just waiting for our house to sell (which will probably take forever in this market but at least we're not in a vinyl village) so we can leave this state. I'm sure many have great experiences with Indy but we have not been as fortunate. And we are both white collar professionals.

Folks, I am truly sorry that your decision to move to Indy turned out to be a bad one. Same for me. I wish you all the best, and hope that your business turns out to be a very successful and profitable venture. You moved here five years ago, eh? On September 4, it will be five years since I moved here from the Baltimore metro area. I had absolutely no idea how it would turn out as I could not very well predict the future (Who can?). Yeah, if I had not moved here, I never would have known how it would have turned out. And for me, life in this town over the last 3 years has been mostly lousy. I took a risk, a gamble and failed. We both failed, but I am confident that I will prevail, along with you nice folks. In my case, I will more than likely get out of Indy during the early fall. My very best to the both of you.
