We're moving from GA and in GA there is a state funded (free) pre-k program for 4 year olds the year before they enter kindergarten at age 5. Does Indy have any program similar to that? Can anyone recommend a pre-k program for my 4 yr old daughter for the fall (next school year)? She will turn 5 at the end of October. Also...what would you consider to be the best elementary schools near Avon?

Hi! *waving* I live in Avon!
There is no free pre-k in Indiana. In Avon there are a lot of good preschools (my kids go to La Petite Academy-- and we love it!) and beginning next year they are doing full time kindergarten but it is not free.

Right now we have free half-day kindergarten, and full day is free to kids who need the extra help (they are tested at the beginning of the school year). This upcoming year they are going to begin offering full day kindergarten to all kids, with a tuition if you choose to use it. Half day will still be free, and it will still be free to kids who need it. I can't remember what exactly the tuition is right now ($2000-ish) but it is way less than daycare.

Avons schools are almost all 4 star award winning. I would say the Avon school are all pretty much equal, there is 1 brand new school opening next year (River Birch Elemtary). All of the school buildings are pretty new and almost laid out identially, except for 2 (White Oak and Maple) are older buildings. Here are some websites to help:

yea, Indiana, sadly is very behind in regards to education of the very young. I don't think kindergarten is even a requirement in this state.

I read in a local newspaper that the minimum age for children to attend school in Indiana is 7 years old.

yep ... which is why kindergarten receives minimal attention. This state needs to catch up.
