My husband and I are considering moving to Indianapolis soon. Namely because of the insanely low rental prices. Right now, we're paying close to $800 for a subpar 2-br apartment. And, so many listings in Indianapolis at just $475 for a nice two bedroom are making the area seem very attractive to us.

However, we're concerned about safety. I've included links to the places that we're considering putting in an application for. And, I'll also include the given address for those that don't want to open the links.

I do have a few questions for anyone that is willing to answer...

1. Is $475 p/m really the average for a nice two bedroom apartment? If not, what is?
2. What price would we need to pay to get into a safe/hip part of town?
3. Is Indianapolis safe? I'd like to be able to walk outside our apartment without a worry.
4. What is there to do in Indianapolis for a fairly young couple without children?
5. How can we make like minded friends in the area? We're young - don't have kids. But aren't into the club scene. We like to go out to comedy clubs, coffee shops, walk around downtown, sporting events or just go out for dinner and a movie.

Okie dokes... now onto these rental properties we're so eager to find out about!

1. La Casa At Arlington -- 1368 North Arlington, Indianapolis, IN

Indy has no nice apartments for $475. Spend at least $650.

1. Very scary.

2. Dull, but not scary. Indy's Southside, past Hanna, is heavily Country-Music, pickup-drivers and will flat kill criminals who threaten them.

3. I wouldn't live there. Lots of noise. Lots of gangbangers.
Scary, at times. Those apartments have brought bad areas straight up College Ave. South of 42nd is outright terrifying. It's a short drive straight up College to those apartments.

4. Very scary.

5. Scary.

Indy really isn't that safe, and it gets horrible Winters. If you're on the move, I'd pick Richmond.

Horrible, high-crime area. Right across 465 on 38th Street are some of the most decaying neighborhoods you'll find in any city.

Coming from upstate New York, they might be inclined to like an Indianapolis winter.

When is the last time you lived at 38th and Eagle Creek Prkwy? I won't disagree, crossing over 465 past High School Road is not a great area. Having said that, I never had a problem visiting Meijer, Saraga, and the other businesses in the corridor.

1st: Yes, Nora Pines are mostly section 8. How do the apartments at 91st and College affect areas 4 miles south? They don't. I have lived in both areas.

Safe is subjective. If you think Indy isn't safe, you have not been out of your suburb in a long time, and probably might jump at your own shadow.

But yes, no 2 bedroom apartments for $475 will be nice.

You've got the direction of influence backwards.

This is reality. This is a big problem on City Data. People try to whitewash huge problems to people from other areas, leaving other people at risk of walking into a trap.

This weekend marks my arrival and move to Indianapolis from Florida. Am happy with my decision and love Indy.

You have received quite a response which is indicative of the friendly and helpful people of Indy.

I stayed in a motel for two weeks while I apartment shopped and glad I did.

But I thought I'd provide you with some resources:

Weekly stay clean motel chains include:

Value Place
Explore low weekly rates and more at these Value Place locations.
(I was at the one in Greenwood and seemed clean and safe.)

InTowneSuites
Indianapolis Extended Stay Living | Indianapolis Short Term Apartments | Indianapolis Temporary Housing
(I stayed at the one in Greenwood for two weeks. The Indianapolis East one you should check the area first.)

To check on crime in particular areas check out this site:

Crime in your neighborhood -- 2009
(Remember though don't let this drive you nuts, early town in America has some crime.)

Jobs:

Things to do in Indy:

Things to do in Indianapolis on AroundIndy.com™

Nightlife (bars/clubs)

Indianapolis Music and Nightlife | Indianapolis Bars and Clubs

Meet people in groups

Do something, Learn something, Share something, Change something - Meetup

Good luck and what I learned is to always look before you leap. Especially with the apartment. The weekly motels do have two burner stove, fridge, coffee maker and microwave. You'll need utensils, pot, pan, plates etc.
Best decision I made was to stay and look at apts before signing a lease.

Oh, please. How ignorant. Downtown, Broad Ripple, Butler-Tarkington, Irvington, Holy Cross, Old Northside, Herron-Morton, Fall Creek Place, and Meridian-Kessler a few of the many outstanding neighborhoods INSIDE 465.

If you look for something at the $800 you're paying now, you'll do OK. Cost of living here is lower in other areas too, not just rent, so that should be of some benefit. The Shadeland Ave. area just outside 465 is pretty reasonable and safe.
I pretty much agree about pricing. I rented for a while before my wife and I bought our house, and I think $800 is about what you can expect to pay for a recently renovated 2-BR apartment in a safe part of town.

I agree about parts of 38th and disagree about others. West 38th near 465 is pretty stable and reasonably safe. It wouldn't be my first choice, but it isn't ghetto by any stretch. I wouldn't say a two mile radius from 38th is necessary, either. For example, there are some very nice condos at 40th and Meridian, only two blocks north of 38th. They are surrounded by $400,000 houses. The Indiana Governor's Mansion is eight blocks north of 38th Street at 46th and Meridian. There is a nice high-rise building right at 38th and Meridian with a high level of security and a million-dollar view of downtown. The surrounding few blocks are dicey, but the place has an eight foot fence, a doorman, and underground parking. You'd be safe there.

Indianapolis is a very block-by-block city, so blanket statements like "stay two miles away from such-and-such street" generally don't work.

Try Craigslist also. I don't typically care for complexes, and Indianapolis has a lot single-family housing for rent. I prefer to deal with an individual, but there are upsides and downsides to both kinds of renting. You generally get a bigger place for your dollar, a yard (if you rent a house rather than a condo), and a little more privacy if you rent from an individual. You get a dedicated, professional staff, a community vibe, and better security if you go with a complex.

Huh?

Downtown - Scary

Broad Ripple - Not bad, but your car will be vandalized, and the frat boy party noise will keep you up nights. The partygoers will litter everywhere and walk across your yard.

Butler-Tarkington - you're on an island. Five blocks away is a war zone. Those warriors will come into your neighborhood.

Irvington - Scary

Holy Cross - Very scary

Old Northside - Scary

Herron-Morton - Scary

Fall Creek Place - very scary

Meridian-Kessler - Not bad. The houses are nice, but get a security system and yard lights. You're less than 15 blocks from a war zone.

You're pushing it with "outstanding." ITB is not Carmel.

You're kidding, right? It's a friggin' battlefield. Chances are 1/1 that your car or motorcycle will be vandalized or stolen. People outright avoid 38th and Moller after dark. That entire area is boarded up. There is no commercial on 38th Street activity from 465 to Michigan. It's bad news. Really bad news.

They do work, for the reason you just stated. If the bad elements are a block away, you're too close, and you need to move far away. Do you think the bad element can't walk a block down the street?

In all honesty, from an outsider's perspective some of you don't make Indianapolis sound very appealing.
