Default 4th of July in Indy - best place(s) to watch?

We are thinking of spending the 4th in Indy, taking in the fireworks that night, and then heading to the zoo and other attractions the next day. Guess first question,,, how good are the city's fireworks? If possible, are there any better places to observe them? We usually go to StL or Chicago [along w/ Memphis, Ft Wayne, Louisville, etc.] for the 4th, but this year doing something different. Any recommendations, given that we might be in a certain locale for the display, then for inexpensive yet safe/friendly hotel in that particular area? Thanks!

It is a big deal to go downtown to the park and watch from there. Large open grassy area several blocks long at about 6 blocks north of Washington or several blocks north of the circle.. We just park a chair in back of our garage to watch with the neighbors. Go early and have a picnic dinner if the weather is good and grab a place for the blanket. Will be wonderful. You can stay anywhere around town for savings or any of the downtown hotels. But there should be enough parking if you can walk. Usually some at 10th and Alabama or farther north on Alabama. Safe area to walk in.
