My husband just found out he has pending orders (military) to DFAS in Indianapolis.

We are looking for good neighborhoods that would not require a long commute and would like to stay under $200k. Right now I am just trying to get an idea of what is what, and once orders are in hand, I will contact a real estate agent.

Can anyone tell me some good neighborhoods/zip codes near DFAS which is located at 8899 East 56th Street Indianapolis, In 46249? Schools are not an issue since all our children are grown.

Thanks in advance!

46249 is what use to be Fort Benjamin Harrison. It is beautiful. Some of the old military housing areas has been updated and are now private homes. On the north end is a State Park. the immediate area is beautiful but it is no where I'd want to live. Not far to the south of it is a very dangerous section of town. Check the crime statistics. To northeast of it is a very expensive area; Giest.
For the price range you mentioned I'd look at Hancock County.

I was referring to the immediate area around Fort Ben and points east ... Geist in particular and further into Hancock or Hamilton County. Yes, going south on Post road is sketchy, but I'm not talking about living near there.

It would be helpful if you mention if you are looking for a more suburban sub division type of home or a good urban neighborhood. both are available close-by. Suburban won't be a problem either to the east of north (Fishers area). This is a nice area and there are some very nice homes in the under $200K range.

I happened upon this real estate agency when I was living in Florida prior to my move here and it is the easiest search site for Indy homes and they don't hassle you with constant emails or phone #s. I didn't do business with them and not associated in any way, i.e., this is not an ad LOL.

God luck. God speed.

One more thing. Someone mentioned crime statistics. I found this invaluable tool for checking crime areas of the city:

There are several v. nice subdivisons within a 10 minute drive of DFAS on 63rd off Lee Road. Some of them are very cookie cutter in nature but they're reasonably priced when they're for sale. There are several brick homes as well that are at the higher end of your price range on the FCTucker site further east but still within less than a 25 minute drive counting traffic.
