Still a HUUUUUUGE overstatement on the Greenwood and racism thing, and I will post more to dispel it if I have to.

Greenwood is not Martinsville. End stop. Heck, these days, even Martinsville may not be "Martinsville", but I'll reserve comments there--I don't go to Martinsville regularly like I do Greenwood.

The only part of Greenwood that might still fit that "redneck" vibe that people associate with racism (and northsiders seem to associate with all of Greenwood) is a little part of the Old Town near Main Street. About half of Old Town is still a little run-down and trashy, while the other half is largely fixed-up and very nice, classy older homes. I can't think of a time I've been to Greenwood Park Mall and not seen African Americans there, and I know from people who have lived here much longer than I have that non-whites were a pretty rare sight at that mall 20 years ago. The majority of Greenwood is an extension of Center Grove, or vise versa: demographics that aren't too different from Franklin Township or Plainfield/Avon or even some parts of Carmel.

Keep in mind, until recently, people were making the same stabs about Noblesville, including its less than stellar history--I really don't think that is an accurate description of the overwhelming majority of experiences for racial minorities there either.

Greenwood is also a refugee area for Southeast Asian refugees. There is a huge population and one elementary school has maybe a quarter of them as students. It is becoming much more diverse.

As a northsider, I don't look down on Greenwood and its residents. I actually have several close friends who live there and I visit them often.. Although, I have had a couple of wierd interactions there with some "good ole boy" types, once at a traffic light which I thought was pretty wierd. Other than that, I like the southside.

With that said, I'm sick and tired of "some" of the southsiders stereotyping us northsiders and constantly bashing the northside and its residents or labeling us as something that fits whatever stereotype they have (rich, snooty, stock up, blah blah blah)... It's amazing how much venom comes out when the northside comes up especially Carmel. While most northsiders couldn't give two "bleep"s about the southside....generally speaking.

It is an unfortunate human trait to place people on a scale of "worthiness". It is also a common trait to label areas as "the other side of the track". It goes both ways.

My family and I are looking at Devonshire Apartments ( I think that's Greenwood) and will probably be there for a couple of years while house hunting in other areas. We will know in that time frame what Greenwood is all about so I will take the (negative) rhetoric here with a grain of salt.

I live downtown and enjoy going to Greenwood to shop. We are also moving mom to a senior apartment in Greenwood. There is everything I need but the high end retail stores that I dont shop at more than once per year. To me it just feels like less traffic.

It perhaps does not have as many high end restaurants but I dont eat at them much at all and thus can drive to one if I need to make a reservation.

I am on a softball team, and I will say this about the northsiders on the team, it amazes me how unwilling all of them are to travel anywhere else for the team. There is a girl from Greenwood on the team, myself on the east side, and a couple of folks downtown. Literally, the other 5 or so from Hamilton County refuse to travel south of Pike High School for team activities. All of our practices have to be in or near Carmel or they refuse to show up. It's kind of incredible.

Not an indictment on any side of town, just an observation.

That's just ridicilous! I spend a lot of time downtown, also on the eastside and southside and happen to live on the northside... I like them all! At the end of the day, people are just people, some are good, some not so much, some your type, some not so much.... It's just how the world is. But overall, I've met more good people that are my type of folks from every walk of life, religion, race, gender, etc. etc. etc. or side of town or whatever the case may be.

The north side is the most cosmopolitan part of town.
